Return to Black Hawk Down - 20 years

http://vimeo.com/70572090

I came across this short documentary today that I haven't seen posted here. (New uploaded to vimeo in the last 4 days.) For those of you like me who have never seen the actual locations on film before you may find interest in this video.

It's a very interesting perspective to say the least.

The Rangers
Jeff Struecker

A decorated member of the U.S. Army’s most elite fighting corps, Jeff Struecker was prominently featured in the national best-seller “Black Hawk Down”, later made into a major motion picture.

In the city streets of Mogadishu, Somalia, Jeff was faced with his greatest fears. He was forced to rely on his skills and his “bullet-proof faith” to bring him through some of the most intense combat the U.S. Military has seen since the Vietnam War. Today, he challenges and inspires audiences with his gripping account of that experience under fire and in the face of death.

Keni Thomas

An American country music singer and former United States Army Ranger, Keni was a member of Task Force Ranger as a part of Operation Restore Hope in Somalia, and he served in the Battle of Mogadishu. Thomas works as a motivational speaker drawing from this experience as a US Army Ranger.

As a country singer, Keni has recorded several independently-released albums and two singles, from the album Flags of Our Fathers:A Soldier’s Story charted on the Billboardcountry music charts.

20 years ago in October.

Somebody ought to do a piece on all those 5th SFGA ODAs, too, that were scattered around the Somalian countryside going about their business.

Doesnt seem like 20 yrs ago. I was the WO1 Det Cdr of ODA 525 on the ground there from Mar-Sep. The main reason that 5th SFG teams were not involved in the well publicized fracas was that our replacements had just hit the ground a week or so prior and were still getting their bearings when "Blackhawk Down" happened. There was actually a series of smaller engagements (and mistakes) that led up to the big battle.

I could fill up a book talking about how that whole tragic situation evolved for TF Ranger. But i wont throw any stones here.

I wish you could - even by pm. (Not throw stones; but I was always interested in the full story. I read Bowden's book. Was good as far as it went; but I'm sure there was so much more to learn about it all.)

Paul Howe did a interview for Panteao Productions that is worth a watch....I used to subscribe to their streaming service and watched it. It covered different details and perspective than Bowden's book.

LINK

Also, much of Bowden's research, notes, and interviews are still on the Philly Inquirer website. It is very interesting to see it all in retrospect. It even includes DoD video from the raid.

CW3SF,
I, too, would interested in anything you can add.

Col.(R) Joe Celeski was doing that at one time, he wrote an article or two for the Drop years ago, don't know what came of the book thing though.
