Couple Discover Perfectly Preserved 1961 Fallout Shelter

Remember when...

We had a neighbor out here who had one of these built - my family figured we were too close to a targeted SAC base that it wouldn't matter and thought it was a waste of money.

California Couple Discover Perfectly Preserved 1961 Fallout Shelter 15 Feet Below Their Backyard
DailyMail, 8 June 2013

When a California couple closed a deal to buy a home in Woodland Hills earlier this month, they knew that their new home came with a unique feature – a 1960s nuclear fallout shelter. But what Chris and Colleen Otcasek initially believed to be nothing more than a hole in their backyard turned out to be a perfectly preserved underground refuge fully stocked with vintage supplies.

Descending down a rusted staircase into the subterranean space, the property’s new owners were amazed to discover what amounted to a time capsule of a bygone era where many Americans believed that a nuclear strike from the USSR was imminent.

Brings back memories.....

Had one on the farm and doubled as a tornado shelter. Would hold 12 and my grandfather set it up for 6 months. Now it is the root cellar for the farm. Keep the caned goods there and some other stuff that needs climate protection. My sister is living there and they stock the family's emergency supplies there. Looks like I remember it as a kid. We used to play there and it was our bunker that we defended.
