Should we be outraged because these elected officials are taking advantage of the farm subsidy program? They are not doing anything illegal it’s kind of like taking advantage of certain tax laws that lessen ones tax burden. Personally I find the whole farm subsidy program outrageous. I like the idea of means testing but the problem with that is what gets means tested next, perhaps Social Security? We already have a government out there that is bent on telling us when enough is enough and just what is our fair share.

In the United States, the advocacy group said that since 1995, $292.5 billion in subsidies was paid out to farmers. EWG said 10 percent of farms collected 75 percent of all subsidies, amounting to $178.5 billion. Texas ranked first in payments. Just over 60 percent of farms in the United States did not collect subsidy payments, EWG said.

Iowa ranks number two on the list.

I know some of the folks who get the biggest checks these are not struggling family farmers. 10% of farms collect 75% of the subsidies. The saying here in Iowa has alwyas been that it is not how you farm the land it's how you farm the government. It's just another form of welfare, but like most government programs it has become a permanent fixture.
