CRC 7's Rugby Championship

I played and coached rugby for many years. NBC is starting to show more rugby since the Sevens game has been added to the 2016 Summer Olympics. The College Rugby Championship for Sevens aired this past weekend. The Naval Academy made it to the semifinals. I was dismayed that the team from West Point wasn't in the mix, as a couple of my high school players that I coached played for them in the past and I've been a fan for that reason and the fact that I am an Army veteran. Seems that the team got disbanded due to misconduct. Here's a link to the article...

Disbanded for a chain email? They're Rugby players at a Military Academy for God's sake.

The tourny was fantastic though, the guys from Life didnt get their game up until the second half though. Cal was just a beast and that half that they dominated was just too much to overcome.

Actually, they are US Military Academy students playing rugby, and are held to a much higher standard of conduct than, let's say, the rugby players at Florida State University where I learned how to play. Beer drinking, wild after parties, Rugger Huggers and such are not part of the rugby experience at West Point I would guess!

That means they are not actually playing Rugby then.

As a former UF rugger, I can authoritatively state that, without seeing a cadet ever emerge from a scrum, that west point's standards have to be higher. No offense to the poster above, but how come you Seminoles never brought your team over to the house after games for beer? Maybe once in 4 years you guys had a few teammates trickle over but it was only a few ruggers staying with friends in Gville.

The only military academy to ever give us trouble were those middies in Annapolis. We tried to schedule West Point but they refused to come to FL. They wanted us to go there and no way in hell would we agree to play in the Feb snow when there's perfectly green grass on Norman Field.

I played rugby at FSU in 1982-1983. I don't recall UF even being on our matrix back then (if it was, I don't recall ever going to play thre myself), so I can't give you an answer to your question. I can tell you this, if there was free beer after a match...I would have been there even if was in enemy territory in Gainesville!

I was in elementary school then. I think UF rugby began in the late 70s but I have no clue what division they were in back then. I played in the late 90s-00s in Gville and we played FSU but they wren't in our division. The divisions aren't the same as the regular athletic conferences like acc, sec, etc.

From what I recall, our division was uga, south car, clemson, usf, ucf, mtsu and tenn. I remember senior year playing in the sweet 16 at clemson's campus where we won our saturday game against uga and then lost sunday's game against unc 3-0. pretty sure the western bracket was jack's UC team beating out U Wyoming Cowboys. I think unc ended up losing in the next round in the semis but I never traveled out to watch and this was before they started televising college rugby (which i'm seriously addicted to). btw, We never played 7s except in the Fall offseason messing around with local squads like the Atlanta Renegades or Life College.

"The University of Florida Rugby Football club was established in 1969 and has been a force in the world of rugby thanks in part to its hundreds of alumni. It currently plays two full schedules: a Florida season in the fall and a Southeastern Collegiate Rugby Conference (SCRC) season in the spring."

FSU never played 7's while I was there. I played and coached in Johnson City, TN for many years and we played a Spring and Fall Division III matrix and 7's in the Summer, mostly Regional tournaments. The team has been in Johnson City for more than 30 years.
