Obama free phone's

Interesting concept in a weekly newspaper in NH. All the free phones for Obama voters are actually owned by Obama headquarters who have all the important security numbers and have every legal right to listen into, track and use all private info for their personnel use.

Richard, are you saying that I have no right posting a comment that I found "interesting" and admittedly said was a "comment" in a local newspaper in the "my opinion" section? How could I possibly been more "general"....without trying to create a conspiracy theory?

Your original post leads one to believe it was a news article in a newspaper, not an 'opinion' by 'somebody' sending in a letter to the editor.

Your follow-up clarified that it was, in fact, but an opinion that you found interesting and, naively, credible.

If you want to play such games, you're in the wrong pub.

I am playing no such games. I made a comment that I read in a newspaper. I didnt realize that I had to preface all my postings with background information, such as , what I believe, where I got the info, who said what. I have nothing but the greatest respect for what you guys did. I never comment on Military situations because I wasnt there or did what you did. I am 64 years old and am not Naive. I am and will always be respectful of your service. I do not believe that you need to be so disrespectful to me, however.

If that is what you believe, your SA of this web-site, its membership, and the blogosphere in general is wanting.

If you read through the threads here, you will find that posters nearly always include links to their sources so readers can discern for themselves the credibility of the comments being made in the cited source as well as evaluating the reasoning and opinion(s) of the posters themselves. If not, we ask - this is why you were almost immediately asked for the source of your original claims. And if we're offering an opinion, the accepted abbreviatios are IMO (In My Opinion) or MOO (My Opinion Only) to let readers know that.

In a post such as the one you "cited" to begin this thread, it should have been made clear up front that it was an 'opinion' ("comment") to which you found of interest and agreed; instead, your post made it sound as if it was a news report that - contrary to the laws of this country - was exposing an illegal activity which, actually, does not make sense.

Big difference and, at 64, I would hope you would understand that.

Perhaps a bit more reading in here and less posting until you have a better feel for the culture of PS.Com would be helpful. Gutes lesen.

So, if I own all the phones on my plan, "somebody" is saying that I can monitor the conversations on each of the phones? I know I can track each phone as to the location, and I can get a list of calls made, but I didn't think I could "listen into" them. Maybe I could do it more easily if I tilt my tinfoil hat a little to the left....

Don't know about the ObamaPhones, but on the topic of mobile phone tap and trace, there has been some news recently about a piece of technology called Stingray[1], which has been heavily used by the FBI and local LEO to tap and trace mobile phones. Basically, the Stingray device emulates a cell tower, and analyzes the cell signals in the immediate area until the mobile device in question is flagged. The problem is that ALL devices in the immediate area are passing voice and data through this device during it's operation. Bear in mind that a) this technology has been around for some time and b) femtocells, or in home/office cell sites which utilize your local internet connection can be subverted into doing the same thing by any malicious actor[2].

Moral of the story: Whether the Govt. pays for your cell phone or not, mobile networks are not a secure communications medium in it of themselves.

“Obama Phone” and before that it was the Bush Phone, and the Clinton Phone before that. That’s been around since the telecom act of ‘96 put that wheel in motion. Clinton signed it and it was a GOP majority house and senate at the time. The “free” phone was spun and emphasized this past election, but it’s old news and we’ve all been paying for it for quite some time now. Look at your phone bill and find USF or Universal Access Fee or charge or whatever the heck your phone company calls it on your billing statement. With AT&T I get hit with USF’s for local and long distance for each phone on the plan. It’s not free and we all pay for it regardless of who you vote for. If someone really wants to track you and your calls, well…
