The Special Forces Soldier
As Seen By:
HQS MACV:
A drunken, brawling, Jeep stealing, woman corrupting, liar with a Star Sapphire Ring, a Rolex Watch and a Demo Knife.
Himself:
A tall handsome highly trained professional killer, female idol, Sapphire Ring wearing, Demo Knife carrying gentleman who is always on time due to the reliability of his Rolex Watch.
His Wife:
A stinking member of the family who comes through Fort Bragg once a month with a rucksack full of dirty clothes and a hard-on.
His Commander:
A fine speciman of a drunken, brawling, Jeep stealing, woman corrupting liar with a Star Sapphire ring, Rolex Watch and a Demo Knife.
Dept of Army:
An overpaid, over ranked tax burden that is indespensable because he has volunteered to go anywhere, do anything as long as he can booze it up, brawl, steal Jeeps, corrupt women, Lie, wear a Star Sapphire Ring, Rolex Watch and carry a Demo Knife.

That one was going around Hardy Hall when I was going thru SFOC in 1970. Still just as funny now though.
Oops. Didn' focus on the MACV reference until after I posted (so much for speed reading), so the timeframe I gave is redundant .... However, the version I first heard also references being able "to leap over buildings in a single bound" ... what's with that? Are we ground bound now (grin)?

Oh yeah, now I remember I think I like Johnny Carson's advice: "Next time just find a woman you hate and buy her a house!"

As I recall, back in 1968-1988 it was a Sieko watch.

Rolex GMT or Submariner; Seiko's were the cheap-charlie acceptable alternative.
Only time I ever wore a Rolex were the Submariners issued to us from the Group Scuba locker.
I never wore jewelry but still have a demo knife in my toolbox here at the ranch.

I bought my Submariner at the Bangkok PX in 1972. It is now resting on the bottom of the Pacific Ocean somewhere between Catalina and Palos Verdes... I have since switched to an Omega Seamaster.

This is a "no shitter," I got home one night after a couple of weeks of "TDY", the wife met me at the door to tell me my Team Daddy called to tell we were punching out in the morning for a "trip".
I looked at my watch and told her we had just enough time to wash my dirty laundry and "knock one out" before I had to get back to the team room.
She bolted shortly after that...apparently she wasn't SF wife material!

I bought the sub. Don't know why. I was on a mountain team and a ruck team. Any scuba guy with a GMT want to trade?

Rolex
My first was a submariner. Those DEROS from B-36 (3d MSF) were given a GMT. I didn't get my ring until CCN. CCN issued Swiss knife instead of demo knife. Still have them.

JR, I have not heard that B-36 gave GMTs as DEROS gifts. That is very interesting. You have no idea how much frequently military connections to Rolexes in VN are discussed on the Rolex collectors forums. It usually is brought up in conjuction with (no surprise) SEALS-Who were issued Tudor Submariners at that time. The "SF Rolex"that I always saw in the '70's was a GMT. Private purchase from PX, if I asked. My first Rolex was a Sea Dweller. Bought it as a rising young Recon Jarhead in Geneva. Thanks for that tidbit!

Richard, do you recall if they were Rolexes or Tudors? As you probably know Tudor is Rolex's "lower" line of watches. At that time, the only difference was the movement and name on the dial. The case, crown, band were all Rolex. Looked identical.
