Chasing Ice: Huge Glacier Calving

Astounding footage of a massive glacier calving. I've seen glaciers calve into the sea - chunks of ice the size of houses sheering off 300' tall glaciers. It was thrilling. But nothing like what happens in this video taken from the documentary, Chasing Ice.

Quote:
On May 28, 2008, Adam LeWinter and Director Jeff Orlowski filmed a historic breakup at the Ilulissat Glacier in Western Greenland. The calving event lasted for 75 minutes and the glacier retreated a full mile across a calving face three miles wide. The height of the ice is about 3,000 feet, 300-400 feet above water and the rest below water.

Personally, my first thought was that the skyscraper sized piece of dark blue ice at about the 2 minute mark was an alien spaceship from The Thing.

The back to back Lower Manhattan sized glacier calf flip just past the 4 minute mark certainly makes me feel a bit more humble with all that 100% natural shock and awe.

Coolest video I've seen in a long time.

That was amazing to watch. I bet it was 20 times cooler to be filming it.

Agree. Those guys were incredibly lucky. And patient. Day 17 they got their break of a lifetime.
