FW: Warning from Harris County Constable

Just an FYI...Recieved this at work in email format just now....Take heed TX Residents!

(Am posting in its entire format, un-edited.)

Holly

From HC Constable Patrol Prec. #5

Be careful at gas stations & parking lots/criminals giving free key rings with device chip.

There is a syndicate of criminals presenting themselves as sales promoters who are giving free key rings at gas stations and parking lots. The key ring has a tracking device chip which allows the criminals to track and follow you. Please, please don't accept them. They select their seemingly well-to-do potential victims and if you accept, you might become a victim of their tricks. The key holders are very beautiful and hard to resist accepting; but remember, you may end up paying more than the cost of a key holder, including the risk to your life. Please advise your family members, email contacts, and friends as well

Bogus. This started in South Africa in '08. No truth to it.

You're not thinking of the old "get 'em into a box canyon trick" are ya Roy?"

Hmmm,

Well there are some pretty powerful "powers that be" to introduce this to, so sorry for posting a seemingly bogus thread. My company is global, but it seems they may have been hoxaed? Or maybe the Police did?

Thats scary.

Holly

EDIT to add:
This just came through my email:

Colleagues:

This is a hoax that has been around since 2008 and originated in South Africa during a promotional for a diesel gas company. There haven't been any attempts in the United States relating to anyone distributing key fobs or key chains at any gas station.

Aside from the fact this message is not written in a law enforcement manner, it doesn't have any law enforcement credentials (letterhead), and it's not part of a "Be on the lookout" (BOLO) poster causes immediate speculation as to the veracity.

I have checked with www.snopes.com which confirmed it was false as well as several law enforcement friends I have in Harris County who have debunked this in its entirety.

Respectfully,

***************
