The Nine Lives of Julius

From author Ilona Reinitzer, daughter of the man who had repeatedly defied death, The Nine Lives of Julius is a compelling story about wartime hardships and how one man somehow managed to cheat death so many times. Reinitzer’s book is the untold true story of a young man whose life was forever changed by World War II and its aftermath.

As a teenager, Julius Reinitzer was taken by the Nazis to work in a labor camp outside of Auschwitz. After escaping the labor camp, he joined the Czech underground where he fought against the Nazis during the Czech uprising. After the war, the communists attempted to arrest him for helping his twin brother escape Czechoslovakia. He had to immediately flee without a farewell to his family or his first true love.

As a young man, he performed espionage missions against the communists. During one of these missions, he was shot and captured by the Czech border police. He spent the next several years in communist prison and labor camps. Eventually, Julius escapes the labor camps and flees into Germany where he joins with a new unit of the U.S. Army called the Green Berets.

The Nine Lives of Julius is a compelling story about wartime hardships and how one man somehow managed to cheat death so many times. His story reveals the good in people and of the wonderful friendships that helped him to survive.

He taught Czech once in a while at Devens. He would bring his photo albums to class. His stories were epic!
I still have a picture of him and I after one of the language classes.

Remember standing a battalion formation at Flint Kaserne on the sport field below the pool. The Bear was putting out that week's poop to the battalion. Looking at his notes over his bifocals (and in a thick Czech accent): "All battalion radiators to go to radiator training..."

I'm like: "What the hell did he just say?"

My 18F leans towards me and says: "All Echoes go to Commo SQT refresher training..."

English as a third or fourth language. What a great man and Soldier.
