Idea for my newborn
A fun poll to start off the weekend
Two things, we are an extremely close team and my wife is a nurse in the newborn nursery/NICU so she knows her doctor quite well. We are having our first next month right after Thanksgiving. Me wanting to get the most out of this experience and have some fun had two ideas pop into my head which I quickly presented to my team, and then my wife.
1. See if the doctor will allow me to help catch the baby. Free cross training opportunity.
2. Getting a picture of me cutting the umbilical cord with my Yarborough. Because that would just be awesome, and a proper way to welcome my child into this world.
Idea number one was applauded and my delta began to tell me how easy it is.
Idea number two was received with an even greater accolade from my team, with my bravos hailing me as a visionary.
With full confidence and the support of my team I presented this to my wife in the same order. Her response in summary was a kibosh on the knife, and her response to my defense of the idea was "Of course the guys think its an awesome idea, which is why you should have known I was going to say no!"
So the question. Given the chance would you cut your kid's cord with your Yarborough?

The real question is what would you do if if they had not issued you a Yarborough?

Good question. I think my next option would be borrow my delta's (who is a very proud Texan) collectors bowie knife.

Hey, your wife is going to be too busy and in too much pain to notice that knife until it is too late.
If you think it is a good idea, and do not mind extending the post-partum cut-off period significantly, have at it.
I doubt she will be giving you a second chance though, so be sure to get pics.

I think it's a great idea; I hope you can make it happen.
Congratulations on the baby!

I concur with The Reaper. You're gonna be high and dry for a while anyway- might as well go for it. She'll get over it....... eventually.

Bring it up again, and after she says 'no' again, just say, 'Alright... just keep an open mind about it... okay?" (Get that 'hang dog' - 'I'm so hurt that I'd cry if I weren't so strong" look as you say it and after.... the whole day, at least. IF you haven't done these expressions at some point... well, nevermind. All is lost!)
Then... don't say a word. Smuggle your Yarborough into the delivery room. As the strong contractions, shouting, shunting you aside begins... and she's all sweaty, drained, probably drugged up, and has that glazed look - ask again, very quickly: "(Your personal term of endearment), is the Yarborough okay?". Chances are, she'll just nod and say (more like grunt) "Okay!" (Which means: "I don't give a shit. Leave me the hell alone. I just want this OVER!)
Make sure this approval is videotaped.
(Remember... I'm divorced.)

Out of necessity - no problem; when modern medical facilities and methodologies are available - I wouldn't do it personally. I think it's more of a "good idea fairy" thing than something truly memorable for such an event.

When my kids were born I was offered the "honor" (I'm not dising it).
I passed. Didn't strike me as that big a deal. If you use the big knife make sure the docs and nurses know in advance AND the back story. Having the medicos freaking out at that particular moment might sort of spoil it.
Do you have a little beret ? I think that would be cool.
When I was on my last team I fully expected my 18D to handle everything from pre-natal care to determining sex via ultra-sound to the actual delivery. I explained this as hands on training. (I did not mention this would be a great cross training opportunity, too)
Years later, MRFL pointed out that during that timeframe she was doubling down on the pill and keeping a calendar. BCMU was born a year after said D failed to send us a Christmas card.

Did she say exactly what her objection was? I don't get why it's a big deal.
As long as the Yarborough is sterilized, and you cut the umbilical cord in the middle....if the part close to her tummy is trimmed up by the doc and the part on the baby's stomach is clamped/trimmed by the doc, then you're not really cutting "her", right? You are cutting a piece of cord that will be thrown away.
I think you have a cool idea, but I'm the last person to speak on behalf of womankind. Congrats to you and the wife!

That is definitely a given, there is no way I'd try to sneak a giant knife into a hospital, I would ask the doctor well in advance if this was possible. Of the two mental pictures I get out of this, one is funny, one not so much. Doctors and nurses freaking out makes for a comical scenario in the mind, standing in front of the SGM's desk not so much.
I like the little beret idea, that would make a cool picture, little beret in one hand, tiny kettlebell in the other.

I did this when my twins were born 13+ years ago. It was kind of a team tradition.
The wife had no problem with it, and even authorized me to purchase a Randall model 16 for the event.
I cleared it with the doc, who was a female earthy crunchy type from Cambridge MA. She still talks about as as one of her favorite delivery room stories.
