A teenager is recovering after he accidentally shot himself in the penis and a testicle while cleaning a gun he had just bought, police said.
Michael Smeriglio, 18, initially lied to police and claimed he had been shot as he walked down the street in Port St. Lucie, Florida on Thursday.
But after he was questioned by police, he admitted he had done it to himself while cleaning a gun at a friend's house on Verada Street.
Doctors told WTSP that the bullet went through his penis, his left testicle and then lodged itself in his thigh.
The teenager told police he bought the gun at a party last month.
On his Facebook page, the youth is pictured posing with friends in front of mirrors and leaning against BMW car bonnets as he lights up cigarettes.
While police were investigating the incident at the home, they discovered marijuana in the house.
