ABC's Nightline and Primetime
Did anyone watch these two programs last night ?
Prior to PrimeTime's 10 PM airing, ABC had numerous leads during the evening that the show was going to be about " the Army not taking care of it's own" - the men and women who have returned from battle with grievous injuries - amputees, etc. - and who were faced with being destitute (their word) because they could no longer return to their former employment. Stating that they Army was ill prepared to face this situation - had never looked past the immediate medical care of the soldiers wounded in battle.
I turned on the program late and this story only lasted for the first 15 min. of the broadcast. ABC's premise was blown to pieces by the 3 star general (I apologize that I did not catch his name) who basically said, (paraphrased): You're right. And we are going to be sure that every wounded soldier will receive the support they need.
That General's response gave ABC nothing to stand on in their efforts to smear the military +/or the Administration re: the GWOT.
RE: NIGHTLINE - It was one of the most incredible pieces of trash journalism during a Presidential campaign year that I have ever seen. ABC went to Viet Nam and spoke to former members of the VIET CONG to get their memories of the incident that Kerry bases his mil. career on - circumstances of the fight that lead to his Silver Star, etc.
They had allotted the last 5 minutes of the program to John O'Neill of the Swift Boat veterans. He blasted Koeppel so strongly that the program went almost 15 minutes past its scheduled end. I tried last night after the program to obtain a transcript of the program. Today I did the same thing and perhaps my google skills are weak but I can't find transcripts of either Nightline or Primetime.
O'Neill challenged Koeppel to allow the other side of the issue to be presented on his show. O'neill was a man of great self-control. All the footage of the Nightline producers retracing the swiftboats' steps and then speaking to selected former Viet Cong, and the final editing of the piece appearing as 'their efforts for the public's right to know what REALLY happened when Kerry was there" - as Koeppel's closing lines stated - was undeniably one of the most biased, slanted pieces of yellow journalism that I have ever seen.
