Another milestone reached. For those interested, National Geographic will air a show on Curiosity's initial journey from the drawing board to launch time - Thursday, 8/9, 10P.

But seldom in human history has science had an opportunity this grand. Curiosity will be looking for the carbon-based building blocks of life, using instruments that have a good chance of finding them if they're present; it will be searching for habitats that could have once supported life; and just possibly it will find some biosignatures that show, or at least strongly suggest, that Mars was indeed once home to living things.

If you have something to say that will add to a discussion, we'd like you to say it. However, merely adding a smiley doesn't cut it, so if that's all you have to say - don't. Richard

I wonder if Quaid managed to get the O2 generator started before Curiosity landed?

Amazing.
I hope I see a manned mission to Mars in my lifetime. I know there is talk of one in 2030's so we'll see.
If so it most likely won't be a U.S. only mission

Here's a shot of Curiosity under canopy, taken by the Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter.

Very happy for the JPL nerds. There were 79 functions that had to perform flawlessly in order for Curiosity to land safely...and none of them had been pre-tested. If just one of them had failed it would have been crash & burn, and maybe not just for the spacecraft. There are quite a number of NASA people out of work in this state thanks to our CINC.
