They must refresh that regularly; just finding the basic Brian Williams page with their tweeters and a handful of stories.

For those who point out the large flat screens, given the changes in technology, patterns of market demand, government regulation of the airwaves, and corporate practices, and the trajectory of American mass popular culture, what types of televisions are people supposed to have?

I guess this is directed at ME.

Seeing that the size of the thing was well above 50 inches, and something like that would go for some where in the neighborhood of $800.00 (or more), I just find it ironic that a family of self proclaimed illegals can afford something like that. Where there are people struggling to get by paying bills and keeping a roof over their heads and food on the families tables, who are in this country LEGALLY, and DON'T rely on govt hand outs and programs, can't afford any "fancy type BLING" like that. Any and all monies made are "ear-marked" for the above examples.

But who am I kidding ..... she probably got it with her tax refund. D'oh

It takes a set of cajones for illegals to wear a T-shirt like that, add the Che picture and you've got a good idea of how these people feel about getting their American citizenship...... I recall just after my I received my AD discharge and a little prior to getting together with some of the other guys to form the nucleus of the 12th SFG active reserve unit in Chicago,I had the opportunity to join the Australian Army(No BS!)....... Several guys found out that there was a drive on by the their Army, kinda like our Lodge Act to try and get former SF,Marines,Soldiers with critical MOS's to sign up,the deal was simple, they would move the family at no cost and assist us in getting settled in their country, giving up your citizenship was not required..... Compensation in money would be available and pay was by rank at time of enlistment and your commitment in years you'd be willing to serve..... Obviously I didn't take it,BUT reflecting on where our Country seems to be headed,I can't help but wonder what would have happened if I did.

I doubt you'd have worn a Ned Kelly t-shirt.

While your post prompted my question, the question was in response to many other observations of that nature. And while the question is implicitly critical of an argument, it is not a criticism of you as a person. You're a Cubs fan--that fact speaks for itself.

To me, the irony is three-fold. First, we currently live in a civilization that is driven economically, socially, and culturally by consumerism. However, when certain people subscribe to this sensibility, we mock them. Okay, but where in this criticism is the discussion of where consumerism comes from? Is its source the barrio or is its source the corporate board room?

Second, we live in a country in which almost every walk of life is subsidized in one way or another. Yet when certain types of people use subsidized resources in ways we don't like, then there's a problem. We get worked up when certain types of people steal resources. Yet we stand mute when other types of people stretch, bend, or break the rules of the game. (Who places a bigger burden on the American economy. Is the problem illegal aliens or the business owners, politicians, and consumers who benefit from the presence of illegal aliens? Is the problem illegals and those on public assistance gaming the system or is it those who hire accountants to exploit loopholes in the tax codes and then list the accounting fees as a deduction?)

Third, we roundly blast the American political left because many of its members believe that they know how people should live their lives. Yet, we're perfectly comfortable telling people we've never met how they should live theirs. In some circles, it is fashionable to lecture the poor on what they buy. They don't need such a big television, a fancy car, or a name brand pair of sneakers. In other circles, it is fashionable to lecture the affluent on what they buy. They don't need such a big television fancy car or a name brand pair of sneakers. How about that.

To be clear, I am in absolute agreement that illegal immigration in America poses a profound threat to our national security. I am also a firm believer that the triumph of America in world history is that most of us are committed to the concepts of equality under the of law and the rule of law. And I worry about the declension of this commitment.

My point is that when we start nitpicking each and every aspect of people who disagree with us politically, or who make different life style choices, or practice different cultural sensibilities, or who subvert the rules of the game to their own benefit, we greatly undermine our ability to communicate effectively with those who hold different points of view. (This point, I believe, is similar to one of the many very eloquent point Orion5 made in the "FLOTUS is a Marxist" thread a few weeks back.)

IMO, this type of nitpicking plays into the hands of our opposition. All they have to do is point out the inconsistencies and double standards of our arguments and their supporters will not notice that the policies and programs enacted in their name have not materially improved their lives.

Make no mistake. I am not a bitter person. I am perfectly content with the widespread epidemic of asshattery that rampages across the land like a rabid wolf in the light of Artemis's bow. I like my neighbors. Strike that. I LOVE my neighbors. And their kids. Wonderful, eloquent people. Bless their hearts.

However, if I were prone to feelings of bitterness--which I absolutely am not--, I would ask myself the question: Do I want to make the choice to be bitter, or do I want to make the choice to participate in the process of solving the problems. Because it is hard to do both. (Or so I've heard...I'm not bitter. Just ask anyone who's seen my Facebook timeline. Or my farms at Farmville. OMG, I forgot to harvest my rhubarb.)
