A colonel posted this story to an email list serve of strategists and made the point that MISO should start studying how the feminists and LGBT groups have turned arguably the most conservative institution in America- DoD- into one of the most liberal in only 4 years.
I think he has a point. I remember reading something awhile back about a concerted effort on the part of gays to sway American public opinion on gays to the extent that it would result in several short-term objectives on the way to the final objective of transforming how Americans view sex, marriage, and "identity" into one more fluid and relative.
The short-term objectives were marriage rights, US government approval of same-sex couple benefits, gender identity as a protected class, overturn of DADT, transsexual rights (to include free healthcare involving gender change), and inclusion in hate crime legislation- among others. Some of those objectives have been reached already, obviously- others, like same-sex couple benefits and transsexual rights within DoD are still being worked.
The more interesting thing for MISO to study, in my opinion- is the "how". I think one can gather the lines of effort for all this were multiple:
1) Build a perception of gays as normal by incorporating them into as many TV shows as possible and showing them as normal versus the gay pride march stereotypes (avoiding most Public Displays of Affection & flamboyant types)
2) Work hard at giving LGBT platform issues a stage- like on talk shows- especially if the host is LGBT or LGBT-friendly.
3) Tie the anti-"bully" effort to LGBT efforts- portray LGBTs as victims of terrible treatment and brutal crimes. Try to add LGBTs to hate crime legislation as a protected class.
4) File lawsuits to get LGBTs inserted into as many organizations and programs as possible- infiltrate and change organizations from the inside (DoD, US government, Boy Scouts, religions, etc.)
5) Executive Branch forcing DoD to change and become LGBT-friendly. Once official policy changes- the interest groups knew that DoD would actually support LGBT goals/culture because of the nature of DoD.
The colonel's email went on to say that the feminists were also close to their own version of many of the same goals- and, interestingly, that the email was making its rounds through Army chaplain circles...
