The race for Gabby Giffords’ Old Seat?

What say the Grand Canyon Folks??

Is Kelly going to win??

Quote:

Race for Gabby Giffords’ Old Seat Shapes Up for Hard Fight, By Elizabeth Hartfield, Jun 8, 2012 6:00am

On Tuesday voters in Arizona’s 8th congressional district will go to the polls to cast their votes in the special election to fill the seat left open after former Rep. Gabby Giffords’ resignation.

The race, which has been under way since April, is between Republican nominee Jesse Kelly, a former Marine who ran against Giffords in 2010, and Ron Barber, Giffords’ former district director. Barber himself was injured in the shooting outside the Safeway grocery store on Jan. 8, 2011. He was shot in the leg and the cheek.

Giffords has not been very present in Barber’s campaign. She was featured on a mailer paid for by the Democratic Party of Arizona, and she will be campaigning for the candidate this weekend. However, regardless of Giffords level of involvement, the race was never going to be in the bag for Democrats.

“It’s a district that’s pretty much split right down the middle, and one of the reasons that Gabby Giffords was able to get elected and re-elected was that she was a more conservative Democrat,” said Brinton Milward, director of the National Institute for Civil Discourse, who also directs the University of Arizona’s School of Government and Public Policy.

The 8th district, currently located in the southeastern portion of the state and includes part of Tuscan, leans Republican. It has gone red in the past three presidential elections. Giffords narrowly won her re-election in 2010 against Kelly, 30, ultimately defeating him by a margin of about 2 percentage points.

You been living in a cave, Teddy.

She resigned because she needed to recover from the effects of her gunshot wounds and felt she couldn't properly represent her district until she did.

Here's her letter of resignation to Speaker Boehner:

Agreed, however her picture was on AOL yesterday and she looked great, there was no sign she ever went thru what she did,the close up of her face showed nothing that resembled what happened.....

As I understand it, she still has trouble walking and a lot of trouble reading, speaking, and comprehending. While this would not impede a lot of our congress-critters, she felt she could not adequately represent her district.

As to JJ's question: who knows!?! I was not a fan of Kelly's, though I supported him against Giffords in their race. In the recent primary, I had hoped our own Frank Antenori would win, but I guess Kelly still had lots of money left from the previous campaign.

Barber is a twerp, plain and simple. He's a political staffer. He is way more liberal than Giffords positioned herself. However, I would NOT underestimate the sympathy vote in that district.

In short... close, but Barber wins. (I could be wrong and usually am... hope so in this case.)

Doesn't really matter. We've been redistricted and they will all be running for CD2 in November. CD8 will wrap around the southeast, east, and north part of the state. We're orphans here...which is probably a good thing.

The new and improved CDs have really made it interesting. In mine, my favorite (very HOT, imnsho) bi-sexual, former Mormon, former state rep and senator... and former Green Party compadre will be running against of plethora of her fellow D's to await who wins with the glut of R's!

She's liberal as hell...but I would like a staff job, so....

I was wrong. The final map shows the current CD8 will become CD2 and not the wrap-around CD1. CD8 looks like it will be up in TS's area. We will still have too much of Tucson to help, though. Kelly was within recount range last time, but chose not to.
