Gay Marriage Debate

The following letter ran in todays USA Today

"Iowans' poor judgment

Ex-chief justice Marsha Ternus and justices David Baker and Michael Streit represent the best not only in who we are, but also who we should be. These three stood up to public pressure and made the right decision. They were given the Kennedy Profile in Courage Award for being honorable people. They were insightful and, indeed, courageous. Their decision sent a clear message that the days of bigotry and homophobia are well on their way to the trash heap.

The people of Iowa removed these justices for making an unpopular decision. If this is how they feel, perhaps they shouldn't be the first caucus in our political process. Backward thinking such as this has no place in our society.

Ray Harris; Springfield, Mo. "

I see a lot of hypocrisy in this letter especially in the comment about the justices being removed for making an unpopular decision. I wonder if he feels the same way about the recall of Gov. Walker in Wisconsin? Its the liberal wing of Wisconsin wanting the recall, were it about conservative feelings who cares. Conservatives put him in office and as far as I can ascertain he's done nothing illegal, the left just doesn't like him. He should be allowed to finish his term then give the voters their say at the polls.

For the record I voted to remove the three judges, I felt that this decision should have been in the hands of the people like in North Carolina, but our gutless Governor Chet Culver would not let it come up for a vote and put it in the laps of the court thus relieving him of having to commit one way or the other. I guess WE the people were heard when we removed these three. I am neither a bigot or a homophobe, but I have a problem with judges legislating from the bench. Obama has thrown the gay and lesbian crowd a bone with no meat on it, its not as if he's stated that he going to take this issue any further than just saying he supports their right to marry. He's entitled to his opinion too and I do not have to agree with it. Compromise to a liberal is rolling over and agreeing with their point of view, they have no room at their table for us.

Question A question from one back bencher to another

Why are you starting new threads to discuss matters that are already being debated in existing threads?

Should have titled it differently

I realize that my thread broaches several topics, Wisconsin recall, gay marriage and the removal of the 3 judges in Iowa. I could not find any threads re: the Iowa Judges hence my starting a new thread, the judges were the basis for the topic. I wish I were as eloquent as most of you all are when it comes to posting. I do use the search option when contemplating a post.

cbtengr--

I see your point about the challenge of categorizing the OP and titling the thread.

However, I do suggest that you consider the utility of taking advantage of one of the strengths of this BB--the overall intellectual curiosity and flexibility of its members. A thread on a topic can twist and turn a bit quite a bit, appear to go completely off track, and then right itself over the course of weeks, months, and years. IME, those members who are interested in a topic will do their due diligence by reading every post in a given thread (or threads) and consider thoughtfully a post even if it doesn't exactly fit that thread's original topic to a T.

HTH.
