WWII Vet Says Nobody Helped

A WWII veteran is attacked by a carjacker and left to crawl his way to safety in plain sight of passersby. What is wrong with people?

Quote:
Brantley told The Associated Press said several people passed by him as he crawled, unable to walk because his leg was broken in the attack. The carjacker knocked Brantley down, took his keys and drove off in his car about 10:40 a.m.
"I was trying to go in ... and see if somebody could call the police and an ambulance because I couldn't stand. I had to crawl — I tried two or three times to get up," Brantley said Saturday. He said he was on way home from Bible study when he stopped to put gas in his 2010 Chrysler 200, which he recently bought to replace another car that had been*stolen.
"People were passing me just like I wasn't there. ... I was crawling and they just walk by me like I'm not there," he*said.
Brantley said as he approached the building, he asked a woman to open the door for him. He said at first it appeared she wasn't going to but she did and then kept walking. He found it distressing that nobody helped*him.
"Any time a person is crawling on the ground, you know something happened to them," Brantley*said.

He needs to move, wherever he is living.

And get a gun.

It's Detroit

This sort of thing makes the local Detroit news often. Muggings and carjackings in Detroit often result in some person nearby operating their cell phone camera to sell the video to the news, while other able-bodied people stand around and watch. The event is frequently followed in a few days by posterboard signs on sticks, and some of the neighborhood who march up and down the block with "Stop the Violence", before retreating to their homes to allow the next acts of violence.

My neighborhood is full of accents. Many/most of those are retired legal immigrants who believe that we are primarily responsible for taking care of each other, and we're close to being a "unit".

We aren't waiting for that undefined "they" to come into the neighborhood and solve our problems. Granted, the average age is 60-70. But a shotgun held by an old codger is still a shotgun.

Agree. He has to know he is not in a nice neighborhood. Where are his 8 kids who must be in their 50's - 60's? Where are his 18 grand kids? It is fairly obvious he is on his own. He'd be better off moving. In the interim- he should get a weapon to protect self.

This is endemic to all massive cities. I will never live in one for any significant period of time, and if I need to visit, I keep those visits to a minimum. Thankfully, the internet has mitigated most of my needs to travel for work to such places.

I haven't seen this type of behavior in the Southwest.

Last year in Monument Valley there was a plane crash in which the pilot was pinned into the cockpit and was severely wounded and unconscious. First on the scene were two locals who witnessed the crash and ran to the crash scene since the terrain was too rough to drive through with their 2WD vehicles. They cupped the leaking fuel to keep it from dripping onto the unconscious pilot while others worked to free him. One spark and they all would have gone up.

This past weekend just North of Phoenix (mile marker 241 on I-17 N), I saw a tire blow on a 30-pax bus. The bus swerved and eventually flipped on its side on the shoulder of the freeway. There just happened to be a group of exotic race car enthusiasts (exotic race cars, not exotic enthusiasts ) heading North for lunch, and several Ferrari/Lamborghini drivers pulled over to assist the evacuation of all passengers and the driver. Several passersby also slowed down to provide water and snacks to the passengers while they waited for the police to arrive. The bus was also leaking fuel and everyone focused on getting the passengers safely away from the crash site.

None of these people (to my knowledge) were first responders. Plenty of people still run towards danger to help out when they can.
