Great find...

Thanks BMT! There is some good stuff here. I am reading two SOG Books now. Will look at these later next month.

I now have a question for all men from SOG...

I was re-reading Franklin Miller's book again last week and I came across something that I am just a little confused about.. Here is why. Miller first fought with the 101st Air Mobility as a LRRP. How did he make the transition from there to SOG and did he half to go through the training that SF does or was it one of those cases that I have heard whereby SOG would be short on men doing Recondo that they would take more men from other sources such as LRRPs?

F. Miller (CCN)

5th SFG(A) would accept personnel having a minimum of one tour in-country for assignment to one of the Command and Control detachments. If recommended by the C & C commander, CDR 5th Group could award special identifier "S" , and if otherwise qualified they would be eligible for further Special Forces assignments. These individuals performed admirably and while no attendance at the "Q" course, continued the professional SF tradition.

One other question...

Thanks JR as that is what I am looking for. One other item. Were they allowed to wear anything about SF, such as Berets, Tabs, etc., etc?

Ref: F. Miller (CCN)

Those troops assigned to 5th SF Group, and airborne qualified, were authorized to wear beret, full flash, oval, and patch. If on DEROS, completion of the tour, the individual had not been awarded the "S" identifier, then he was no longer authorized wear of SF items. The Exception was the SF Patch on his right shoulder.

There was another category. Those who had completed the "Q" by Correspondance Course, but had not done Robin Sage. Normally the "S" was awarded only after the completion of Robin Sage. The Viet Nam tour itself was considered as equivalent and the "S" was awarded.

Robin Sage didn't exist during the Vietnam era.

SWS and SFTG class scheduling combined sometime in '70.

There was a commo guy (Gonzales (SP)) on Big Jake's SCUBA Team and somewhere around 1977 somebody looked at his records and came down and said he wasn't SF qualified and had to go through Robin Sage.

Everybody got a big laugh out of it but he went and came back. Said it was no big deal and even some of the cadre got a chuckle out of it.

"Skip" Reid was in our Ph III class in 1974. Had served with SF as an 05B in VN but was going through Ph III with us to get his Full Flash.

Don't know when it was implemented, but in the '70-'71 time frame, you were not allowed to go across the fence without One-Zero School!! And after going to both......I understood why!!
