Lap Top help

Had another Lap Top go down on me, that makes two in a year. Everything backed up thank goodness. So I need to buy another. Any suggestions where to get a good deal on a basic lap top these days. Just basic, no games or high speed media required. But not super cheap like the Acer I'm trying to type on now

Also, do's Dell still give discounts to Military. Checked their web sight out, didn't see anything. I would call. But the Indian that would answer would have no idea what I was asking about

Try an apple, I made the switch about a year ago . It was a little painful at first but, once you go Mac, you'll never go back.

Get a Mac.

A MacBook Air will run you $1,000 and a MacBook Pro will run between $1,200 - $2,500 depending on size. I switched from PC to Mac last January and bought a MacBook Pro 15". I have been very pleased with my decision to switch.

Although, the Windows 7 laptops I was looking at were a couple hundred less than the MacBoo Pro, and I'm sure they still are, I was impressed by its build quality, the Operating System's look and feel and the availability of the applications I needed.

Another big factor in my decision was the experience I had with the number of Windows laptops I have been given at work over the years.

None of them even come close to my MacBook Pro.

I have tried both as well....After fighting with being strictly tied to apple programs for music, pictures, etc I had to go back.../

As many faults as Windows may have had...my current Laptop is a Gateway with windows 7....said i would never get a gateway, but it is at two years and running like a champ.

What is your preferred operating system? Mac is great but really pricey. I'm in the process of building a Mac desktop instead of ordering it - that will save almost a grand on the overall price.

I see a lot of good deals on Craigslist all the time, but you have to know what you are looking for before you take that step.

You can get a mid level machine and put a free OS like Ubuntu, which will allow you to perform most everyday functions. It is even bootable from USB.

As far as laptops go, I have been using a mix of IBM(now Lenovo) and Dell of the years, I currently work off of a Latitude E6400, it's a solid machine, but heavy. We recently purchased a few 14zs, nice machines and we have been getting some good feedback from our people in the field who they have been assigned to.

Techbargains(http://www.techbargains.com/) is a good site to keep an eye on current deals, find a make/model that meet your eye and budget and some Google-fu should tell you a bit about reviews, reliability etc.

Since I need to use a CAC card reader, get on AKO and the CARRNG acount via remote CITRIX I've been using HP laptops since 2005. This is my second HP laptop that I'm on, my first one got to old and slow but it still works.

Apple failed to live up to the hype, IMHO.

Currently have Dell and Gateway, no problems.

I've worked in Tech Distribution for a little over a year now, specializing in retail.

One Laptop I would look at is your generic Lenovo Thinkpad. I've heard a lot of good things and I know that alot of the buyers we talk to ,that aren't Apple guys, personally use Lenovo products.

HP does have some very good dependable products but IMHO there is a large gap between their "basic" laptop and their "Top-Shelf" lines. "Top Shelf" there are few better, but for the most bang for your buck I would look into a Lenovo and comparably ASUS.

I got lucky and found a Toshiba (mid-level computer) at Office Max that had sat on the shelf for display. Our office max does not turn on their displays--the systems sit in the off mode on their shelves. The Toshiba display model was on sell for 20% off and was in the original box. I had the sales clerk open the box and pointed out some minor scratches--manager reduced it another 10%.

Moral: don't hesitate to look at open box/display systems or to bargain with the stores.

I went with VAIO. Windows 7 is actually very user friendly. Maybe Microsoft is finally catching on. Nothing like the older version which sucked big time.
On another note Picked this up the other day. HDMI PC to TV Wireless transmitter. The quality is amazing. Better then the laptop it's transmitting from. You Tube Music video all day bitches!
