Canada Cracks Down On Veils
Canada Cracks Down On Veils
http://www.reuters.com/video/2011/12...eoId=226740252
Video Transcript:
"In a move likely to increase tension with Canada's Muslim minority, the country's immigration minister said on Monday it would bar women from wearing face coverings while taking part in citizenship ceremonies. (SOUNDBITE) (English) JASON KENNEY, MINISTER OF CITIZENSHIP AND IMMIGRATION, SAYING: " To segregate one group of Canadians or allow them to hide their faces, hide their identity from us precisely when they are joining our community is contrary to Canada's proud commitment." The announcement will primarily affect Muslim women wearing the niqab, which covers the whole face with only an opening for the eyes. Muslim leaders say the move would force Muslim women to choose between their religious convictions and adopting Canadian citizenship. (SOUNDBITE) (English) WAHIDA VALIANTE, CANADIAN ISLAMIC CONGRESS, SAYING: "That would be very uncomfortable because they have not made that choice themselves, and also this is their religious duty." The government's decision might well trigger a court challenge from those who say the restriction violates freedom of religious provisions under Canada's constitution. Travis Brecher, Reuters"

Unfortunately,I do know who will win!!!......... Canada like all the other nations will eventually back down and give in........... We must not upset the muslims, they have their religious rights which we cannot tread on.........

Big Ted I am not too sure about your statement. A few years ago I would have thought the same, but I think Canada is starting to wake up and is having enough of this sort of thing. That Jason Kenney is a Conservative and he has been in the news quite frequently fighting for new Canadians to become well Canadian. He does not want new Canadians to forget their cultures, but feels the baggage that some cultures bring needs to be left behind. His actions are not perfect, but at least they are a start in the right direction.

Good for the Canucks.
Kind of suprises me a little though considering how open Canada has been to asylum seekers and immigrants in the past.

Let's See:
"That would be very uncomfortable because they have not made that choice themselves, and also this is their religious duty."
But, it's OK for them to believe that we are all Infidels and OK to lie to us, and try to force us to become Muslim and if we refuse cut off our heads? I don't think getting my head chopped off is a choice I would make myself.
What's wrong with this thinking?

Mr. Kenney is trying to change that image and even went as far to block US military personnel who tried to claim refugee status in Canada. Apparently they did not want to fulfill their obligations to serve the USA and fight in Iraq or Afghanistan so they ran to Canada instead. It looks like history does not always repeat itself, heh-heh.

Citizenship in most countries is jealously guarded, and non-citizen residents have significantly less rights than citizens. I've never understood the people in our country that would let non-citizens vote, it displays a lack of civic understanding.
I'm not sure if I applaud Canada or not, I've never been a big fan of the State telling citizens what they can and cannot do. However, I do believe that immigrants should seek to melt into the culture of their new home. Multiculturalism eventually leads to Balkanization and all kinds of social ills. I also think that those who want an Islamic way of life governed by Islamic law have better places to find that, and should not be given special treatment in the west.
