The story says it was a car stop on the campus.

Unless the second victim is actually the bad guy, the weapon was the same that killed the cop, and the fatal wound was self-inflicted. It would make sense that the police would hold that close to the chest until they could confirm the theory beyond the shadow of a doubt.

Just speculation, probably not the case.

There's been a rash of gunmen on campus the past two months.
1. Students got robbed by multiple assailants at gunpoint in a dorm room at Fayetteville State.
2. UNCW had a bank robber running around on their campus.
3. UC-Berkeley had a gunman during their protests on campus. And shot him.
4. VT shootings (Part 2).

*Also, some idiot here in Greenville saw an umbrella on a bookbag and reported it to police as an assault rifle. We were on lockdown for 3 hours while Greenville, Pitt and ECU Police, along with Highway Patrol looked for the mystery gunman.

Seems like an unusually high number.
