Monument honors U.S. 'horse soldiers' who invaded Afghanistan

Quote:
Demossville, Kentucky (CNN) -- The U.S. special operations teams that led the American invasion in Afghanistan a decade ago did something that no American military had done since the last century: ride horses into combat.

"It was like out of the Old Testament," says Lt. Col. Max Bowers, retired Green Beret, who commanded the three horseback teams.

Thanks so much for posting the link to that story. Having tracked some of these early achievements from the get-go in my day-job I am so glad these stories are being told. Legendary? Yep. Legend? Hardly.

As they say, faerie tales start "once upon a time..."
The real stuff starts "Now this ain't no shit, but..."

Very cool indeed.

De Oppresso Liber!

"De Oppresso Liber!" Perfect!

Quote:
NORMAN, Okla. — The first statue near ground zero to salute the heroes of the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks will not depict a New York firefighter or policeman — but a lone U.S. commando on horseback in the Afghan mountains.

Titled “De Oppresso Liber” — “to free the oppressed,” the Green Berets’ motto — the 3-ton, 18-foot-tall bronze monument was forged to honor the troops who first responded to al Qaeda’s attack from its safe haven in Afghanistan.

I work a few blocks away, and will be working Veterans day, I'll see if I can head over there to get some pictures to post up.

Excellent link!

I'll see what I can do, I'll try to keep my calendar clear and workload light so that I can spend a few hours there. If there are any PS.com members heading out there as well, give me a heads up. (we need a beer mug emoticon)

I'm going to try to head there sooner rather than later also, although I am working on Veteran Day. I don't think the memorial is completely open to the public yet though. Where exactly are they putting this statue?

They are walking it down 5th Ave. with the Veterans Day parade and putting it across the street[1] from WTC, I'm thinking West St. WFC area, your guess is as good as mine...

I may have to wait until after Veterans Day to actually get some good shots.

Here are some photos from the parade. The statue will be displayed temporarily in the World Financial Center. Permanent location TBD, but likely to be in Liberty Park at Ground Zero.
