Russian army stops buying Kalashnikovs
Russian army stops buying Kalashnikovs
http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-europe-15102867
For all you young guys who make fun of the old guys who worked with the Kar 98s, SKSs and Mosin-Nagants? The sun is setting.........
The Russian army says it is halting orders of the famous Kalashnikov assault rifle until a newer model is developed by its manufacturer.
Chief of the General Staff Nikolai Makarov told Russian media that the army already had too many of the weapons in its stores.
A new model is expected to be ready by the end of the year.
News of the army's decision is reportedly being kept from the rifle's designer, Mikhail Kalashnikov, now 91. Janey Mitchell reports.
But still, how many millions of AKs and their variants are floating around the world right now?

As well as the ones yet to be manufactured in China (and then handed out like candy).
Simple, reliable, and cheap to counterfiet-I think rifles with Kalashnikov actions will be the most often seen, for a long time to come, personally.

Don't leave home without it
Vet I know puttin' his life back together has used his art and made this up for me on a whim. (One of those scary-awesome kind; if he can see it he can draw it.)

That would warrant a transition to a (recently-tuned) 1911.

Maybe the drug cartels in Mexico will pick up the slack in the orders.

Longevity
I wonder how many AK's in service world wide were originally carried by the owner's grandfathers. If longevity is a factor in evaluating weapon system success, other than the .50 caliber machine gun, is there an older firearm still in general service? ( Since the 1911 replaced by M9).

Well, the MG3 is technically a MG 42 in a different caliber, and is still in service.

Misleading banner - they haven't stopped buying AKs, just the older models - I can't see the Russian military being equipped with Colts, Berettas, FNs, IAs, H&Ks, SIGs, FAMAS, etc. - their new weapons will no doubt be AKs of whatever designation.
And so it goes...
