Boehner Asks Obama to Delay Jobs Speech

LOL These guys are starting early!

http://www.bloomberg.com/news/2011-0...bs-speech.html

House Speaker John Boehner rebuffed President Barack Obama’s request to address a joint session of Congress on the same night as a Republican presidential debate in California.

Boehner, an Ohio Republican, cited a lack of time to prepare for the speech that Obama wants to deliver on Sept. 7 and instead asked for the address to be given a day later, according to a letter addressed to the president that was released by the speaker’s office.

Obama earlier in the day said he wants to deliver the address to announce his proposals to create jobs and jump-start the economy. A White House official speaking on condition of anonymity said the administration consulted with Boehner’s office before releasing the request and no objections were raised. Boehner spokesman Brendan Buck said the speaker’s office didn’t agree to the timing of the speech and that the White House "ignored" protocol for working out an agreeable time before making an announcement.

The unprecedented public dispute over the timing of the presidential address sets the stage for a battle to lead the political debate on the economy going into next year’s election. Obama is proposing measures he says would boost growth and bring down the 9.1 percent unemployment rate. He’s confronted by Republicans who won control of the House from Democrats in 2010 on a campaign that stressed criticism of Obama’s economic stewardship and the $830 billion stimulus he pushed through Congress in 2009.

Of course the Obama camp denies this was scheduled purposely to detract from the debate...I think they should just delay the debate until 9pm and then weigh in on whatever plan he reveals....

Whoa...whoa...whoa... You mean on-the-fly...respond...like without analysis by grad students, scripting, teleprompters or wardrobe change?

Aaaahh....I dunno.... It sounds pretty dicey. Somebody draw up a risk-matrix on this...

Exactly. No teleprompters in the debate anyway. Have a select group of folks compile a list of questions from the President's speech/plan and present them to the debaters.

Why not just hold the debate an hour earlier (at 7) so families that work get to see it and go to be early? Everyone already knows his plan.

The Corner reported on what the suspected plan will entail earlier today.

Spend more money we don't have, yawn...

The only thing I can see making some sense, which he has been pushing for some time, albeit without money we have to back it, is infrastructure upgrades, which are sorely needed, considering most of America's infrastructure is on average 50+ years old, and busting at the seams. Granted making certain segments work for their entitlements, and fixing our aging/ailing infrastructure at the same time would be a win-win, but that would be logical and would require said segment to actually do some work and earn something.

"Earn", that dirty four letter word...

How about if they actually do both at the same time, but superimpose the debaters' silhouettes on the Jobs speech and have the hopefuls provide commentary Ala Mystery Science Theater 3000?

Obama bows to Boehner; jobs speech will be Sept. 8

Obama bows to Boehner; jobs speech will be Sept. 8

http://www.wral.com/business/story/10072214/

"WASHINGTON — President Barack Obama has acceded to House Speaker John Boehner's wishes to deliver an address on jobs and the economy to a joint session of Congress on Sept. 8. The president had requested Sept. 7 for the long-anticipated speech................."

Another dustup over something that didn't need to happen.

Don't sell this guy short. He has a plan and can now deliver what will surely become his famous September 7th speech to Congress.
