Obama: Whites need not apply

From the Editorial Staff at the Washington Times.

Excerpt

Quote:
The White House issued an executive order on Thursday titled "Establishing a Coordinated Government-wide Initiative to Promote Diversity and Inclusion in the Federal Workforce." The purpose of the order is "to promote the federal workplace as a model of equal opportunity, diversity and inclusion." In other words, it would be better for the government if public-spirited white workers sought employment elsewhere. Lost amid all the politically correct box-checking is the principle that the most qualified person should be hired for a job.

Maybe ffolkes should try reading the Executive Order for themselves.

I did and don't see that it does what the OpEd authors claim.

I read the executive order and the OpEd. I think that is exactly what they are doing. For anyone who works for the government, "diversity" has always been code for hiring more minorities. Just the way it is. I think that is exactly what the executive order is directing the federal workforce to do.

I read the order and it appears to fix something or reinforce something that is not broken or even an issue.
So what is his point? More diverse than the gen populations statistics?
Our first affirmative action President wants more affirmative action I guess.

"By this order, I am directing executive departments and agencies (agencies) to develop and implement a more comprehensive, integrated, and strategic focus on diversity and inclusion as a key component of their human resources strategies."

I wasn't aware there was a serious problem with minority hiring or job placement and retention in the federal government. You learn something new every day.

The Federal government already employs a disproportionate number of minorities, and the Chief Executive is a minority member.

How much more should they be doing, in the field of reverse discrimination?

I read it as being politics in an up-coming election year to make it look as if the POTUS is concerned enough to mandate governmental agencies to continue doing something without really doing anything more than is already being done...except add to the paperwork pile - the WH version of assembling the troops for a little drill and ceremony practice in case somebody needs a parade to show the government is doing something.

Looks more like a backdoor support initiative for the pulp wood, paper, and printing industries during these hard times than anything of substance or importance.

Meh...

It's not just the Federal Government. Try getting a public job anywhere in California if you're male and caucasian.

You'll be the last one to get hired.

From a hiring authority perspective this just makes writing a thorough job ad more important. Spell out the minimum requirements clearly and civ personnel will back up a hiring decision based off demonstrable skill requirements rather than criteria unrelated to performance. If two job candidates appear equally capable on paper of meeting the defined job requirements, expect a white male to be prioritized below a non-white or non-male.

FWIW, this past spring, the U.S. Merit Systems Protection Board, a federal agency, updated a 2002 study on the status of women working for .GOV. This updated study is available here.

In 2009, the board updated a 2007 study on fair and equitable treatment for employees working for .GOV. That study is available there.

Both reports indicate that although .GOV has covered a lot of ground, there remains wide spread perceptions among a variety of groups that merit alone does not lead to hiring and to promotion. The principal culprit? Favoritism. Source is here.

"People say I was discriminated against by a supervisor who is not like me, and the fact boiled down to that they do not like me," said Cynthia Ferentinos, the MSPB project manager for the report. "But it's not racism, it's not sexism. It's favoritism."

A quick look at the demographic breakdown of the federal payroll shows that “diversity” goals have been more than met. According to the Office of Personnel Management, federal employees in fiscal 2010 were 66.2 percent white, 17.7 percent black, 8 percent Hispanic, 5.6 percent Asian and Pacific Islander and 1.8 percent American Indian. Compared to the general U.S. population, the federal force is a bit too diverse. Blacks are overrepresented by 6.9 percent compared to the civilian work force, Asians and Pacific Islanders by 1.2 percent, and American Indians are more than double their proportion of the population at large. White Americans, who make up about 70 percent of the work force, are underrepresented by around 4 percent.
What cynics you are. I'm sure the President was saying that we need to reach out and hire more white males to maintain diversity, and ease up on hiring all those Blacks, Asians, and American Indians

When it comes to an organization that fears litigation from outside groups, none of that will matter. The appearance of maintaining a diverse workforce will outweigh common sense. Qualification will play second fiddle to statistics.
