Ruger M77 Trigger Assembly

Have searched and haven't found info.

I have a question related to the Ruger M77 for an experienced gunsmith, one of you experienced QP's (Reaper, TS, Longrange, etc come to mind), or someone with first hand experience and a similar issue.

Had one worked on by a Gunsmith that wasn't known to me (1st mistake) who set the pull at 3lbs. It is a stiff pull and single stage.

Question: Can the trigger be set to be more like a target pull (smoother) and at a lower 2 1/2 lbs with the current factory assembly? If not, a suitable, even jeweled, and strong (take a lot of field abuse in extreme environments -35 to 115F) replacement assembly that will?

The rifle is an acceptable accurate for its purpose but with a better trigger it would be close to my other rifles. Most are Rem 700's or custom's. (eg. rounds touching or making the hole bigger at 100yrds)

Its a muscle memory thing especially with quick off hand shots w/o sling.

Just drop in a Timney and set the pull to whatever you want (as long as you currently don't have a 2 stage LC6 trigger in it, now).

Will bring it and one of the other rifles for comparison to a pro to drop one in.

Factory triggers have really gone down in quality since all the legal bs!

Have a Rem 597 .22 Mag just sitting in the safe.

Agree on Timney triggers. Put a 501 on my Remington 700 and it shot like a different rifle. It's a drop in so it was easy to install. If your not confident adjusting it have a competent gunsmith do it. Do some research and talk to some people before selecting the person who is going to work on your firearms.

Didn't have much choice locally (locally meaning 30mi away) at the time. I'll either drive the 100mi's to a good one , ship them to AI, or one of the guys whom built my customs.

Other important note to M77 owners or soon to be. The only way to fix the issue is drop in a new assembly as the factory's one is setup that way. Safety thing for dumbass's.

Of the big three (Remington, Winchester, and Ruger), Ruger has the worst trigger, and in my experience, the least adjustable/tuneable.

There are a number of makers of good aftermarket triggers, any one of which should be able to be set up with a decent (and safe) pull.

Isn't ROBAR in your area? IIRC, they do gunsmithing, as well as coatings and custom rifles.

Sad to say, but sometimes, it costs more money to make an inferior product work like one which was more expensive initially. Personally, I would sell the Ruger and use the money towards a Remington, or a Winchester.

I agree with inferior product and normally would get a Rem short heavy barrel for the purpose it was intended for. Under normal circumstances would sell it too. Thing is I have a sensitive wife, and it was a Christmas present from her.

I'll definitely check out ROBAR when back in civilized country, hopefully by spring 2012. Right now still in the middle of the Helena National Forest, Montana. Helena is an hour away on a good day. Nice bladder emptying ride though
