Florida Grandmother Allegedly Gave 8-Year-Old's Teacher Loaded Gun As End-Of-Year Present

The iconic apple for the teacher might be a tad outdated. But it would have been a nicer end-of-the-year gift than the gift one South Florida teacher received this week. The teacher was given a loaded .22-caliber handgun according to officials at a South Florida elementary school.

The alleged gift-giving incident occurred on Tuesday afternoon, when the grandmother of an 8-year-old student met with her granddaughter’s teacher in the parking lot of Allamanda Elementary School in Palm Beach County.

The granny allegedly gave the teacher a package that was meant to be an end-of-year-gift from her granddaughter. The teacher did not open the package until she got home later that day, at which time, school officials say, she found assorted toiletries and a loaded .22-caliber handgun.

The teacher immediately notified the school district and police. When questioned about the gift, the grandmother allegedly claimed she was unaware of the fact that the gun was in the box.

In a press release about the incident, the Palm Beach County School District said, "at no time was the gun in the school nor did the student have possession of the gun, according to a preliminary investigation."

Officials have not identified any of the parties involved in the case. According to district spokesperson Nat Harrington, the investigation is ongoing.
