Nice find!

I wonder how much those deviate from COTS portable/rollout panels like those from Brunton?:

http://store.bruntonoutdoor.com/port...-and-chargers/

Friends of mine use some of those Brunton panels for recharging the batteries of their electronic gear (laptops, GPS, Comms, iPod etc) when in the field for forestry and/or wildlife management projects/research for extended time frames. They have been a real boon for extending field time duration.

A radio transmitter, SATCOM, thermal sight, LASER designator, etc., etc, uses a lot more power than the simple electronics you named. I think the real solution is going to be a common power source for all of the gear, and maybe a fuel cell of some type, or if mounted, plugging it into the vehicle periodically for a charge.

Solar panels are not small and do not deliver anywhere near the power that people think they do.

The sad thing is not that long ago SF would do the same thing. Today we like having our 5590s and talk how rechargeable 90's suck and don;t hold a Charge. While I was in 10th Group we had a Nice Palican Case with all kinds of Brunton Solar Panals, Connectors for everything out there - Military Spec Connectors to cell phones, ETC. Today we SF run from that. Well thats what I see more of in Afghanistan.

I remember going on a SR mission back in 2006, yes 2006 in Afghanistan. We were dropped off on a Mountain Top over looking a Valley. My TS was a Commo guy and when I brought up bring or getting Rechargeable Batteries I was looked at by all as Mad. TS said we don't do that now a days.

That way of thinking was the start of our down fall as far as the way I see SF going now a days. Old guys on ODAs letting "OLD Equipment" to leave SF PBOs and skills sets like 137, HF gone basic SF tradecraft. Becuase of SATCOM and other things. Yes we have improved ourselves and done great things. But just like SF at all levels run from using HF. VSO site MOST have 3Di systems WHY?? For that 18 to 25 slide CONOP for us to go to that KLE or local bazzar to get supplies? Tell or better show you what we are doing? What happen to a Nice 7 to 14 day TXT file CONOP? Conventional higher wants it so why not jsut make it the standard for every CONOP not just the higher level ones.

Why hasn't SF gone to the 117 radio and start using HPW. We have had JTACs using HPW all the while. But SF 18Es think that HF is something of the pass. Get off your XBox and Video IM chatting every night. Yes I know we are getting it SOON - But we have been asking for YEARS!!!

Yes, I like my creature comforts like the next guy. But SF is UW and we IMHO have been thinking to much inside that Conventional Box in these theaters.

I think SF 18Es need to read the article BIG TIME!!

Sorry for highjacking this tread.
