My condolences to your sister.

Portland is about as fringe as it gets. In 2000 Gore and Nader got 70.6% of the vote in Multnomah County. In 2004, Kerry got 71.6%. In 2008, Obama got 76.7%.

By comparison, Obama got 78.5% in Alameda County, California, home to Berkeley, and 76.9% in Suffolk Co., Massachusetts, home to Harvard and the rest of Boston's lefty population.

Remember the shock in Portland a little while back, when that jihadist terrorist plot was uncovered? The trendy leftists of Portland couldn't believe that anti-American terrorists could possibly target them. Just like Michael Moore whose response to 9-11 was to wonder why the terrorists attacked New York, which had voted for Gore.

Oh yes… very progressive this population is… though, not necessarily because they are bread this way. It seems that we attract them like lint to a static charge. They come from all over the country; some even from other countries. And when they get here, and they have their little piece of ground fenced off and secure, then they start closing door to others. Ban the Logging… Ban the Fishing… Limit building… Remove the Dams… Stop the hunting… Stop the field burning… Open the doors to illegal aliens… open the doors to medical marijuana… open the doors to sex trafficking… close off the forests, close off the rivers, protect the wolves and to hell with the ranchers.

Strengthen the unions and destroy industry…

So where is this leading us? Perhaps the state will go bankrupt, and then people will consider a change, at least fiscally. Or perhaps Anarchy and chaos will come to town… They are already at the door, and our Mayor does his best to appease and befriend them.
