Very interesting.
Always heard about those rifles but never really got the whole story. Ok, no powder to worry about getting wet or fouling the barrel. Wonder how long it took to pump up the resevoir?
Have a nice RWS that I shoot once in awhile.

I think they said you had to pump it 100 times or so. But then you could fire 40 or so rounds and not have to worry about pumping it back up.

Thought I heard the narrator state that it took 1500 repetitions to pump up the resevoir. It would take a lot to build up 800 PSI. It's an interesting rifle but don't know how practical it would be in combat.

crap you're right sir, I missed one "0" there. I meant to say 1000 pumps or so but yes you are correct, 1500. Definitely not practical, but at that time I'm sure it was the sweet toy to have. I can only imagine what the collectors would dish out for something like this.

Shoots a .46 round ball? Dang. A .45 round ball weighs 144 grains.

Most of the newer precharged pneumatic (PCP) air rifle or pistol models use compressed gas in high pressure tanks. 4500 PSI is not uncommon. Because the tank is small and light enough to shoulder as a rifle, it lacks repeatability. In that each shot is using less pressure than the last. So most will have a 4500 PSI HP steel scuba tank in tow.

When we eere in England following exercise "Flintlock" 84 I remember seeing a short piece in an Englsh paper about a woman being shot and killed on a London street by someone using an air rifle. Since then I have ahd an interest in them. This particular air rifle has been around more than 20 years and in the late 1980's the US Cav store on Yadkin had one of the air shootin versions in the store.

Two kids have been killed with air rifles this week, one here in Fayetteville.
Apparently, the ones my buddies and I used to shoot one another are not the lethal variety.

Back to the original air rifle here.
I'd read accounts of that rifle being carried on the expedition and have read some history of the development of air rifles.
I guess the boys forgot to carry the dive tanks west.

I have a .22 BSA Lighting,,
"barrel has been shrouded in permanently attached bull barrel moderator".
The crack of the .22 is not quiet.. I wear hearing protection, even outside.
