Haiti mobs lynch voodoo priests over cholera fears
Haiti mobs lynch voodoo priests over cholera fears
http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-latin-america-12073029
In the all cultures are equal department this morning we have.........
".......Although many Haitians still practise voodoo or use aspects of voodoo in their religious worship, the latest violence erupted out of fears the traditional priests were using their powers to spread the infection.
“People have been blaming us, saying that we cast spells and did evil things which brought the earthquake as a punishment” said Max Beauvoir a Voodoo priest.
Officials counted 40 people killed - mostly voodoo priests - killed in one region of Haiti, the AFP news agency reported, with five others killed elsewhere.
"The victims... were stoned or hacked with machetes before being burned in the streets," communications ministry official Moise Fritz Evens said.............."

I suspect we're there to avoid a mass migration to our shores. From that perspective, it may well be worth it to "pay for protection."

Maybe China would just buy the whole place outright for three or four dollars worth of beads and set up a naval base and air base. They could buy concrete and rebar from the US and have missile guidance systems shipped Fed EX real cheap and it would save them lots of money on making fuel for their nuclear missiles. When the economy is bad you want to save all the money you can. I imagine some enterprising soul can figure out a way to sell them some of our used nuclear warheads now that we don't need so many and that would make money for us and save shipping costs to the Chinese. Looks like a win win situation for everyone
In spirit, I agree that it is really frustrating to help a gov't that is so corrupt and inept that it won't help its own people.

Well they are finally catching on. Probably the best thing they have done for themselves in awhile.

This is not new.
Moving forward, we should start a company that supplies concrete and rebar, and begin to invest heavily in FedEx? Sounds great!!!
Plan A -
Either the Haitian govt. needs to be desolved, or have them get out of the way whiling having all citizens relocated. I opt for having every building taller than 6" be bulldozed over, the entire infrastructure rebuilt, making the island an exclusive resort location with a 20 year build plan. Haitian citizens move to DR.
Plan B -
Dominican Republic does not accept Haitian refugees. We (the world) pulls out completely, we allow zero commerce with the island for 50 years, in or out. Haiti/DR becomes ZombieLand, a new theme park for Wolfgang Hammersmith and wannabe gamers, let's make is as real as possible, a Jurassic Park for gamers.
We rebuild later. Revenues come from gamers and resort developers.
Bad idea???
Plan C -
I'm lost, I guess we just keep moving down a path that ends with us bankrupt, the Haitian govt., corrupt, the citizens have new houses and internet. The world realizes the USA can no longer support developing countries, they turn to China. China builts an Island resort for nuclear engineers who speak English.
China buys east coast property, they build more power plants. China moves into the midwest, they build more power plants, China sents food resources back to China. China tells Mexico to stop sending drugs north, there are no more Americans, sell somewhere else. Mexico turns to Europe as a new market, wait it is no longer Europe, it has become a resort location for Islam who work with China in the nuclear industry.

Killing voodoo priests just indicates that the people still believe that voodoo has power. If the thinking would move forward into the 21st century, understanding that the causes of disease are not magic, they would be making progress. Stupid is as stupid does.

Yep.
1994 news reported young girls burned at the stake and men dragged behind vehicles.
Although many Haitians still practise voodoo or use aspects of voodoo in their religious worship, the latest violence erupted out of fears the traditional priests were using their powers to spread the infection.
I guess its tough being traditional. These mobs are not the "people", they are gangs supported by either the radicals or the fundamentalist leadership. Betting you can follow the gang leadership right back to members of Haiti govt. support.
It's all fear based.

I've said it before, and I'll say it again. Three governments in the Western Hemisphere are based on the French system: (1) Haiti; (2) Louisiana; and (3) Quebec. All three governments are very ineffective and oftentimes corrupt.
A vacation across Haiti's border in the Dominican Republic will amply illustrate the differences in English and French-based government. Dominican Republic is safe, fun, not chaotic, and puts out good baseball players. Predominant religion is Catholic. Haiti is not safe, scary, and has a complete breakdown every 10-15 years. Predominant religion is voodoo.
Haiti is not going to change in our lifetimes.

What are your thoughts on the ZombieLand for Hammersmith idea?
It could work right?

...they should have gone the "doll" route
A few pins in the heart of a voodoo doll and those disease causing priests would have dropped dead with no solid evidence trail to follow. Traditional voodoo priests need to be dealt with using traditional voodoo - NOT violence. Instead, a few of them are gonna end up up in a shitty Haitian prison because they failed to follow tradition.
Like I said; should'a used a "doll!

Natural consequence if you hang around a place like Haiti too long...
