For all of you around in the early 80s when all this started........

Just about the only reason the bird survived in the area was because of the large expanse of pines on Ft Bragg. Tree huggers in the 80s darn near shut training down on most of Ft Bragg.

80 year old pines? Hogwash! Go out 87/24 out of Spring Lake and you'll see tons of "Marked Area" pines in 30 to 40 year old stands.

Anybody remember the picture of the Engineers that built an obstacle with some marked logs? Oh, that went over well in the paper at the time.

If I could get my bird dogs to point 'em, maybe we could all show up and have a team woodpecker hunt.

I just remember the stories about the "tree markers" being compensated based upon the number of trees they marked. It wasn't a sighting that was required, just potential habitat.

I was working a job doing repairs at the Recondo school once. We had to work at 30 minute (off-on) intervals. A one day job turned into several days. Never saw a single bird even though one of those banded tress was right next to the rig.
