Can anyone recommend a good guide outfit there? Already set for halibut fishing but want to do some fly fishing for salmon and/or trout also.

I will be happy to ask the Orvis guide here of 20 plus years.. He is a supurb fisherman who fishes the word. He is well off, but he does not play snob. I know he has friends up there.

It's getting awfully late for salmon, but trout fishing should be fine. You might try grayling as well. Not much of a fight, but tasty.

The wife and I were in the bar in the Vegas airport by SW gates after SOAR in 2003 or 2006? This real nice man sitting next me told me he went fishing in Alaska. He had been talking to me about back surgery as he noticed I had a back/lumbar spine problem. Regardless, it was his pictures of the trout he caught in late Sept that made me wish I had gone to Alaska. I could be mistaken, but; I think he had other salmonoids besides trout?

I can honestly state I was truly envious of his trip, plus he had just had back surgery some three months earlier without the pedicle rods, plates and screws that I have plus milions of others do. Those photos of him with really those huge/ awesome trout caught my eye.

I lost/forgot my SOA "FMO" jacket in that place as I was almost mesmerized. He told me about an MD in Phoenix, who had a new lumbar spine surgery technique that saved people from the ISOLA device. This may have been 2002?

I have been on the Green in WY above the wildlife refuge with all trout over 20"-30" even. This man had been to paradise.

I hope our man does well up there. I always wish a man a great vacation.

Preliminary report:

Fished the lower Kenai River from a boat on Sunday. We used spinning lures and also trolled some plugs and bait (salmon eggs). Caught about 70 pink salmon. Saw silvers (coho) but did not catch any of them.

Monday we went halibut fishing in the Kenai fjords out of Seward. Have 45 lbs of filets to ship home. Caught lots of fish, but nothing huge.

Will post pics when I get home.

Tomorrow we are going halibut fishing again. Would try for salmon to get some variety, but the salmon fishing sucks right now in the ocean.

Thursday we will throw on waders and try for some silvers in the Russian River.

Cut some of those halibut filets into 3-4 oz pieces. Make a beer batter and fry them up. You will not taste any better fish than that.

Or, take about an 8 ounce piece, put it on a piece of aluminum foil. Chop up onion, celery, carrots, zuchinni and mushrooms, put on top of the fish. Add a few pats of butter, then sprinkle with granulated garlic. Make a pouch out of the foil, add 2-3 ounces of white wine. Seal the foil and bake for 20 minutes in a 350 degree oven.
