USAF pilot returns after 43 yrs.
The 14 June 2010 issue of the Air Force Times carries a report of the return of the remains of Col Elton L. Perrine after 43 years as an MIA.
"The remains of an Air Force pilot whose fighter was shot down during the Vietnam War have been recovered, identified and returned to his family.
Col Elton L. Perrine of Pittsford, NY., was buried at Arlington National Cemetery in late May, the Pentagon announced June 2. He had been missing since May 22, 1967, when the F-4C Phantom carrying Perrine and Capt. Kenneth F. Backus crashed after a bombing run near the town of Kep, North Vietnam.
Analysts with the military's Defense Prisoner of War/Missing Personnel Office interviewed eyewitnesses and conducted field research at four locations in Lang Son province to determine potential crash sites. The teams discovered pieces of aircraft wreckage, life-support equipment, human remains and personal effects at the sites.
Military scientists matched DNA from Perrine's mother to make the identification. No remains connected to Backus were found, the Pentagon said."
Rest In Peace Col. and welcome home!
