"....."whiting out" Billy Sing......."

Chinese Australians angry at Gallipoli TV casting

http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/asia-pacific/8670531.stm

"........Billy Sing was a hero of the Gallipoli campaign in World War I, but a TV drama has him cast as a white man.

The producers say they could not find a 60-year-old Chinese actor to play Billy Sing's father, so both parts will be played by white actors........"

What's next - a black guy playing Thor? Oh, wait, I think they're doing that.

But really, when you are doing a movie about a real person I think you should try a little harder to get the basic facts right.

Few kids these days realize that movies about an "historical event" have a lot of license taken with facts.

".....could not find a 60-year-old Chinese actor ....." weak - really, really weak.

Maybe they considered the Charlie Chan experience...

Over four dozen films featuring Charlie Chan have been made, beginning in 1926. The character was at first portrayed by Asian actors, and the films were met with little success. In 1931, the Fox Film Corporation cast Swedish actor Warner Oland as Chan in Charlie Chan Carries On; the film was a success, and Fox went on to produce 15 more Chan films with Oland in the title role. After Oland's death, Scottish American actor Sidney Toler was cast as Chan; Toler made 22 Chan films, first for Fox and then for Monogram Studios. After Toler's death, six more films were made, starring Roland Winters.

And so it goes...

While reading this, my first thoughts remembered Mako. He played the machinest mate to Steve McQueen in "The Sand Pebbles", and is still actively acting in movies and T.V.

If he is still "active" it could be frightening. I believe he died several years ago. He would've been a good choice, however, even though Japanese.
