THis is a governement subsidized retirement home for retirees. The gulfport campus is brand new and slated to open in october. It is situated on the beach with a nice little campus. Keesler AFB and a nice VA facility in Biloxi are easily accessed with shuttle service for shopping or specialized care. This is a benefit that can not be matched in the private sector.

If anyone has looked into long term care for loved ones, they will find that the cost is staggering. If you qualify, this is a benefit that you should keep in mind as things progress towards that final DZ in the sky.

This facility usually requires incoming residents to in process to the independant living quarters. Therefore, you can't wait until your in need of assisted living to apply. Once accepted to AFRH there is an assisted living facility and a 24 hour nursing care area on site. It allows for transition in the same facility for the aging retired service member. The cost is a sliding scale formulated on your retiree benefit schedules. You do not have to worry about the financial losses usually seen to your surviving family members if this type care is ever required in the private sector.

and YES.... some of you will be getting the age to consider this in the very near future. Keep it in mind.

I volunteer at NSWC Dahlgren in the Retired Activities Office (RAO) trying to help vets and survivors (widows, widowers, and dependents) get thru the malestrom of "stuff" in order to manage their specific problem.

These refs are excellent, and will be included in the PDL at the base. Thanks, Teddy and Sacamuelas. BZ!

When my dad had his stroke my mom was worried about how she would handle costs if he had to go into long term care.

With the house paid off they didn't use each other's money. I reminded her that his retirement and SS should more than cover the monthly bills. It did. Kinda' jogged her thinking a bit - "Oh, yeah, that will work."

Edited to add - she went to Nursing School when the last kid hit high school and worked as one since my dad retired - so she had/has her own income.
