GAUHATI, India – The Indian military has a new weapon against terrorism: the world's hottest chili.

After conducting tests, the military has decided to use the thumb-sized "bhut jolokia," or "ghost chili," to make tear gas-like hand grenades to immobilize suspects, defense officials said Tuesday.

The bhut jolokia was accepted by Guinness World Records in 2007 as the world's spiciest chili. It is grown and eaten in India's northeast for its taste, as a cure for stomach troubles and a way to fight the crippling summer heat.

It has more than 1,000,000 Scoville units, the scientific measurement of a chili's spiciness. Classic Tabasco sauce ranges from 2,500 to 5,000 Scoville units, while jalapeno peppers measure anywhere from 2,500 to 8,000.

"The chili grenade has been found fit for use after trials in Indian defense laboratories,...

SWAT teams have been using pepper grenades for years. I can't see much use for a military application unless you absolutely don't want to hurt somebody.
They can still fire off a mag of ammo blindly after being peppered.

There is a small portable forge here that when fueled by charcoal is used to stir fry dishes that use scotch bonnets, habaneros and other members of the Capsicum Chinese family.
Now there is a new chile to look for.

If memory serves the Cayenne chile is used for our pepper spray products. It is distilled into the same heat range of the bhut jolokia chile.

All chiles heat come from complex chemical makeups that varies from species to species and how humans physically react is not always measured by the Scoville heat units a chile is rated at.

The bhut jolokia sounds severe, especially if it distilled into heat ranges above how it grows.

I don't think anything like that would be legal for use on military targets. It's illegal too even use tear gas on military targets because it still falls within the guidelines of a chemical weapon which of course is really really dumb.

What would be really neat to have though would be a thorium based nuclear hand grenade. not very practical but I'm sure it would be a lot of fun!

You've clearly never thrown an MRE Tobasco bottle in a fire. Quick way to clear out enough Rangers to get a seat and get warm.
