Smallbore Competition

Hello, I've recently decided to try my hand in competitive small bore shooting. I'll be shooting three matches before I deploy, one each in March, April, and May. I'm shooting with a CZ 452 Lux that is wearing tech-sights. I have been practicing regularly at the 50 meter and 50 yard courses of fire. The rifle really seems to like Aguila Golden Eagle and I can cover my groups with a nickel on most days. Here's the first match I'm going to shoot, it's in Miami (http://www.hrpclub.com/).
Quote:
INDIVIDUAL MATCHES - Commencing at 8:30 a.m. - Saturday, March 20, 2010

MATCH # 1 40 Shots, Dewar Course, iron sights

MATCH # 2 40 Shots, 100 yard, iron sights

MATCH # 3 40 Shots, 50 meters, iron sights

MATCH # 4 40 Shots, 50 yards, iron sights

MATCH # 5 Iron Sights Aggregate (MATCHES 1,2,3 and 4)

MATCH # 6 Iron Sights Team Match - Scores from MATCH 1

INDIVIDUAL MATCHES - Commencing at 8:30 a.m. - Sunday, March 21, 2010

MATCH # 7 40 Shots, Dewar Course, any sights

MATCH # 8 40 Shots, 100 yards, any sights

MATCH # 9 40 Shots, 50 meters, any sights

MATCH # 10 40 Shots, 50 yards, any sights

MATCH # 11 Any Sight Aggregate (MATCHES 7,8,9 and 10)

MATCH # 12 Prone Championship Aggregate (MATCHES 5 and 11)

MATCH # 13 Any Sight Team Match - scores from MATCH 7

MATCH # 14 Unfired Aggregate of Orlando Regional, Sawgrass Championships, Hollywood Regional.
What's the best way to transition one's zero between the 50 meter, 50 yard, and 100 yard courses of fire? Tracking the elevation adjustments in a notebook?

Any tips that might help me out would be much appreciated. If anybody in the Savannah area wants to carpool down to shoot it send me a pm.

Keep an accurate shooter's log and keep an eye on the wind!

You have the sighters to adjust off of, use them to your best advantage. Know when your weapon is on zero after your first fouling shots. Some, (most), weapons will shift and if you go to the point bulls too soon you may pay for it.

Keep a good sense of humor and shoot each shot as if you have not fired a good shot nor a bad shot prior. In other words, each is your first shot. Do not try to repeat a good shot and do not try not to make the same mistake you made before. Both are recipes for firing a lousy shot.

Ignore all drama around you and do not express drama on a bad shot. You will bump into some real primadonnas and drama queens. Stay away from them and make friends with the real shooters.

You will have some real fun and some of it will be from watching the primadonnas have fits, as long as you stay out of the bursting radius.

Have fun!!! That is what it is all about.

Another .02 - If you can shoot .22 outdoors, iron sights, at 50 and 100 m/yds, you can shoot anything, anywhere. As LR said - "watch that wind!" Have fun!

A nation can survive its fools, and even the ambitious. But it cannot survive treason from within. An enemy at the gates is less formidable, for he is known and carries his banner openly. But the traitor moves amongst those within the gate freely, his sly whispers rustling through all the alleys, heard in the very halls of government itself. For the traitor appears not a traitor; he speaks in accents familiar to his victims, and he wears their face and their arguments, he appeals to the baseness that lies deep in the hearts of all men. He rots the soul of a nation, he works secretly and unknown in the night to undermine the pillars of the city, he infects the body politic so that it can no longer resist. A murderer is less to fear.

Thanks for all the advice! I'll google up on how to put together a good shooter's log. I'll be getting a little range time in tomorrow, if I can figure out my camera I'll post pics of my progress.

I got to the range today about 25 minutes before it closed and managed to shoot a a rushed 378-8x on the 50 yard prone course of fire with a temperature of around 65 degrees and probably a 5-8 mph tailwind. Not a very impressive score and I definitely wasn't impressed with my groupings but I figure it's about what's to be expected shooting in a hurry after a long day at work. I picked up a new sling I've yet to try, we'll see if a sling makes a difference.

My two best groups are pictured.

On a side note, I was going to ask how a wind coming from directly behind you impact the flight of the projectile but I found an excellent article explaining it, for anybody interested: http://www.exteriorballistics.com/eb...ned/5th/32.cfm

caveman, not sure if those groups are from one continuous string with consistent sight picture, but your breathing could potentially cause the flyers.
Don't know about you, but "have fun" is the hardest lesson/skill from Master Rick I have yet to be proficient at

Along the line of what Peregrino mentioned on skills from shooting .22, ironsight, outdoors transferrable to other "tools," I learned that being able to shoot .22 or even .177 pistols with all the rounds touching enables the same, if not better performance with 9mm, 357, .45, usw.

How’s the repeatability of those tech-sights? Will they make sufficiently fine adjustments? They sound like a bargin.
