Luke AFB, attempt to breach gate?

Or was this just a poor navigation choice?

1 dead, 1 wounded in shooting at military base
February 23, 2010 - 9:45am

GLENDALE, Ariz. (AP) - Authorities say two men were shot by security officers after they drove a stolen car through a gate at an Air Force base outside Phoenix during a police chase.

Officials say one of the men died and the other was wounded.

The crash occurred at the entrance to Luke Air Force Base in Glendale, outside Phoenix. The base trains pilots to fly F-16s.

Base spokesman Capt. Jerry Gonzalez said the pair allegedly stole a car and drove through a security gate as they attempted to flee from authorities.

Gonzalez said base security forces set up a roadblock. As the driver tried to run it, security officers fearing for their safety opened fire.

THIS IS A BREAKING NEWS UPDATE. Check back soon for further information. AP's earlier story is below.

GLENDALE, Ariz. (AP) _ Officials at Luke Air Force Base in Arizona say one man is dead and a second man was wounded after base security opened fire on two people in a stolen car that drove through a base gate.

The crash occurred at the entrance to the air base in Glendale, a Phoenix suburb. Base spokesman Capt. Jerry Gonzales tells KPNX-TV that no one on the base was injured.

Both men were taken to an area hospital.

Does this mean they get a gold star or an 'E' for excellence on their USAF Small Arms Expert Ribbons?

And they thought the worst thing they had to worry about was stop sticks.

If they had stolen an iphone with gps then they would have known where to drive and would not have made a bad turn. They should have been more careful in their selection of stuff to steal.

I'm just hoping the command doesn't hang the guards out to dry as is the case when something of this sort occurs. Too often I've seen good men who made the best judgments they could under the circumstances get left high and dry by someone who is more concerned about covering their back than taking care of their men.

Sounds like a damn fine shooting! I'll have to go and buy that security guard a beer. (I doubt it was an AF-SP Luke contracts base security gate guards.)

That's what I was thinking. Probably contract guards.
Looks like they have a pretty good streak going with this and Ft Hood.

I'd be willing to bet it had been SP's, what with the roadblock. I'm also surprised they actually got past the gate. Up here there are... measures to ensure you aren't getting beyond eyeshot from the gate.
