Urban Meyer steps down from U of FL

"In a shocking development on Saturday, Florida coach Urban Meyer is stepping down as Gators coach. The school announced the news Saturday evening.

"I have given my heart and soul to coaching college football and mentoring young men for the last 24-plus years and I have dedicated most of my waking moments the last five years to the Gator football program," Meyer said in a statement. "I have ignored my health for years, but recent developments have forced me to re-evaluate my priorities of faith and family..."

Shall his health issues become public I certainly wish him the best. Couldn't be to go to another university though?

Found this:
"And last month, Meyer revealed in a Sports Illustrated profile that doctors discovered an arachnoid cyst on his brain when he worked as an assistant coach at Notre Dame in 1998. Doctors told Meyer that they didn’t consider the cyst to be life-threatening but he could suffer from head pain if the condition flared up because of stress."

I would bet a paycheck that he'll be at Notre Dame next fall.

And the ND thing was already being talked about. He's gonna look like a real ass if he makes a big deal out of the health thing to Florida fans and players and then just jumps on the Irish team. Why can't people just be honest and say, "Yeah, I'm going to do something new." No cajones.

Time will tell though...maybe he really is sick...

I don't think he would go to ND. If he does, as mentioned, it would be a huge slap in the face to UF, his players (both current and past) and the community of Gainesville.

Having said that...since Tebow, according to critics, wont make it big in the NFL, they should hire him to be head coach at UF.

No, but seriously, they should hire Tebow to be the head coach.

...correction, Urban Myer takes "leave" for 2010 instead of completely stepping down. So, Tebow should be interim coach for the 2010 season.

I think they realized what a ripple of shock/dismay it sent through all the unsigned recruits. Many were going to jump to another school without Meyer and some of the other coaches on board....

I would have to concur. I wish Charlie Strong hadn't left yet either. If not Tebow, then Strong would have been a good choice.
