New $100 American Eagle Platinum Coin

On the Level
By Diana West
25 NOV 2009

When I first saw this image of the $100 American Eagle Platinum coin posted at link below, I thought it might be a hoax, which is likely some denial of my own kicking in. But sure enough, as I found at the US Mint's website this is the Real McCoy. (For some reason, I can't link to the page but here is a news release with the image.)

Here is what the US Mint says about this nightmare of Multiculturalist Realism:

"In 2009, the United States Mint introduced a new six-year platinum coin program. This new series explores the core concepts of American democracy by highlighting the preamble of the U. S. Constitution. It will examine the six principles found in the preamble beginning with To Form a More Perfect Union in 2009, followed by To Establish Justice in 2010, To Insure Domestic Tranquility in 2011, To Provide for the Common Defence in 2012, To Promote the General Welfare in 2013, and To Secure the Blessings of Liberty to Ourselves and our Posterity in 2014. The themes for the reverse designs for this program are inspired by narratives prepared by the chief justice of the United States at the request of the United States Mint."

Did Chief Justice John Roberts ever envision the "perfection" of the union being expressed as the absence of white men?

"Since its debut in 1997, the United States Mint's American Eagle Platinum Proof Coin has featured Lady Liberty, a symbol of vigilance and resolute faithfulness to duty, on its obverse (heads side). Designed and sculpted by United States Mint Sculptor-Engraver John Mercanti, Lady Liberty again graces the obverse of this six-year series.

"The 2009 reverse (tails) design is emblematic of the principle To Form a More Perfect Union. Designed by United States Mint Artistic Infusion Program Master Designer"

??

Susan Gamble and sculpted by United States Mint Sculptor-Engraver Phebe Hemphill, it features four faces representing the diversity of our Nation, with the clothing and hair weaving together to symbolize the formation of a more perfect union. It also features an American Eagle privy mark, from an original "coin punch" identified at the United States Mint at Philadelphia....

Nothing left to do, folks, but bake some pies.

Collector coins - the US and Franklin Mints make a lot of money off their collector coin programs.

Does the mint sell the American Eagle gold and silver coins directly, or do they have to go through a dealer, with the ridiculous mark-up?

The Mint used to but now they cannot keep up with demand.

My local supplier in MD has run out of 1oz Eagles but has some Maples, Krugs, and 1oz bars. His markup on gold is anywhere between $50-$100 per 1oz coin but given the market...you'll make that up in just a few days. They also have junk silver.

I've never purchased online however but they've been good with local sales.

TR, You can normally buy coins from the US Mint, but their prices are no better than the dealers. Below is the current status of coinage from the mint, and the appropriate URL for ordering. I am a Gold / Silver “bug” and prefer specific dealers for my transactions.

American Eagle Gold Uncirculated Coins
Production of United States Mint American Eagle Gold Proof and Uncirculated Coins has been temporarily suspended because of unprecedented demand for American Eagle Gold Bullion Coins. Currently, all available 22-karat gold blanks are being allocated to the American Eagle Gold Bullion Coin Program, as the United States Mint is required by Public Law 99-185 to produce these coins “in quantities sufficient to meet public demand . . . .”
The United States Mint will resume the American Eagle Gold Proof and Uncirculated Coin Programs once sufficient inventories of gold bullion blanks can be acquired to meet market demand for all three American Eagle Gold Coin products. Additionally, as a result of the recent numismatic product portfolio analysis, fractional sizes of American Eagle Gold Uncirculated Coins will no longer be produced.
Update: Due to the continued, sustained demand for American Eagle Gold Bullion Coins, 2009-dated American Eagle Gold Uncirculated Coins will not be produced

I have ordered from Tulving and Colorado Gold. Service from both is good. I prefer Tulving (lowest markup / shipping), and he always ships as promised.

I received a proof set silver dollar from one of my Officer Candidates (first salute), I was stunned when I learned what she had paid for it from the Franklin Mint. I have a box of them somewhere, but that iine I remember; that and the Susan B Anthony I got from some kid fron the 82d! Most of them are combat vets now, my first class just made O-4.

I read it and ignored it - actually, artistically speaking, it's a rather pleasing design and the 'melting pot' motif of 'cultural unification' in the design doesn't bother me - or my political and patriotic values - at all.

MOO - but some people (e.g., Diana West) would probably lead more enjoyable lives if they spent more time 'baking some pies' as she suggests and less time fretting over such nitnoy matters.

And so it goes...

I wonder in 2050 if Hispanics will be mad about getting bumped? "Hey, we are supposed to out number whites by now!"

Here is a good bare bones about buying bullion IMHO. Don't buy the 22ct. only the 24ct...

If I had only stuck with my gold and silver mining stocks this year, and didn't buy bullion, I'd feel smart.

Happy Thanks Giving - thoughts with those overseas and their families.
