Reports: Bomb-Making Teen Blasts Off Own Hand
Suffolk County Police say a bomb-making teenager accidentally set off one of his explosives and unconfirmed reports say he may have amputated one of his hands Monday evening.
Officers arrived at 29 Pell Avenue in North Babylon, Long Island just before 7:30 p.m. when the youth's parents called 911 to report their 17-year-old son was injured.
Police say the teen was in the process of creating a bomb in his basement at the time of the unexpected detonation. The young man was transported to Good Samaritan Hospital in Bay Shore in unknown condition. Reports say the teen may have blasted one of his hands off.
PIX cameras captured images of what appeared to be a bloodstained T-shirt, which may have belonged to the teen, on the driveway of the Long Island home.
An arson squad was immediately called when responding officers discovered more home-made explosive devices and bomb-making equipment on the premises.
It is unclear if the Suffolk County Police Department or the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives will take charge of the investigation.
A press conference is expected after 9 a.m. Tuesday.
