El Paso Green Beret Followed Father's Path
El Paso Times, 23 Oct 2009

Staff Sgt. Joshua M. Mills, 24, died in Afghanistan on Sept. 16, the day after a roadside bomb exploded next to his vehicle during a combat patrol.

Mills, a member of the elite Green Berets, was born in El Paso. He was 8 years old when he decided to become a soldier, said Quent Mills, his older brother. Joshua Mills, a graduate of Silva Magnet School, was a member of the Junior ROTC. He relished competing as a member of the Jefferson High School rifle team.

Joshua Mills followed in the footsteps of his father, Tommy. The elder Mills was an air defense soldier who retired at Fort Bliss.

Joshua Mills joined the Army in 2005 as a U.S. Army Special Forces candidate, and successfully completed the course. He also successfully completed the Basic Airborne Course and the Special Forces Sniper Course. Green Berets receive special training and equipment and conduct classified missions. They are considered experts in unconventional warfare. Mills was deployed to Afghan istan on July 15. He was a communications sergeant.
