A short little paragraph...

...that says it all, and is as true today as it was back then. Wish I could fit this on a bumper sticker.

"You cannot legislate the poor into freedom by legislating the wealthy out of freedom. What one person receives without working for, another person must work for without receiving. The government cannot give to anybody anything that the government does not first take from somebody else. When half of the people get the idea that they do not have to work because the other half is going to take care of them, and when the other half gets the idea that it does no good to work because somebody else is going to get what they work for, that my dear friend, is about the end of any nation. You cannot multiply wealth by dividing it."

- Dr. Adrian Rogers, 1931

Thank you for sharing that Gypsy. So true!

I guess somebody in Wisconsin must have read that when they instituted the "Work for Welfare"program. Oh I remember the news, "WHAT?! What do you mean I have to work for my welfare check. It's humiliating to have to pick up garbage in the park!"

It really resonates with me, I have no doubt most here will see the truth in it. I think the last line says it all...

"You cannot multiply wealth by dividing it," fits nicely on a bumpersticker.

Great quote...I thought I had seen a similar quote before so I searched it. I believe it is from Dr. Rogers' Ten Secrets for a Successful Family (1996)

"You cannot legislate the poor into freedom by legislating the industrious out of it. You don't multiply wealth by dividing it. Government cannot give anything to anybody that it doesn't first take from somebody else. Whenever somebody receives something without working for it, somebody else has to work for it without receiving. The worst thing that can happen to a nation is for half of the people to get the idea they don't have to work because somebody else will work for them, and the other half to get the idea that it does no good to work because they don't get to enjoy the fruit of their labor."

Yes "God bless Socialism"

Being a staunch capitalist but having lived most of my life in socialist or semi-socialist countries here's some interesting thoughts I shared with a fellow American recently, who happens to be a constitutional Law Student.

I am sure that most here already understand...

___________________________

Socialism is fantastic! (Wooo, hang-on, don't hang me yet).

Supporting your neighbour in his time of need, giving to others who have not, it is one of the most important actions we can do to create true community; one of the cornerstones of our culture, and unfortunately a quickly fading one, with dire consequences may I add.

But here is an often little understood consequence that makes Socialism so perilous and as chances have it I have a real life example happening as we speak to make my point.

For this argument, let's pretend there is two parts to government:
1) The social conscience and
2) The fiscally responsible.

The social conscience side says
"As good men, with good conscience, we should support our brothers in need, our unemployed, our single mothers, etc etc" - truly altruistic.

But a little further down the track, the fiscally responsible side of government out of nothing worse then wanting to be responsible to its voters says
"It is good for us to give this money away to those in need, but what if we try to curtail the issue before it starts, or at least mitigate the cost somehow, but in a responsible way. We will solve the problem and save our constituents money all at the same time, that sounds fiscally responsible, and after all that is one of our jobs"

Before you know it,

1) The government department that pays for everyone who has an accident now has some of the worse red tape in the world when it comes to work place safety, in fact safety in general, to the point where we now have our children so wrapped up in cotton wool that we’re raising pansies.

2) Prostitution is legalized because it’s happening anyway and this way we can better mitigate those getting sick from STDs.

3) Family is falling apart because guess what, you don’t need family any more, if the preverbal hit the fan the government is there for you.

There are many many more real life examples, but here is the best of all...

4) Your children cost us so much money, Healthcare, Education, Helping solo Mothers, etc etc, that we need to make sure that cost doesn't increase, so... we're going to start telling you how to raise your children.

Right now in my country there is a referendum to appeal a law made two years ago that makes it a criminal offence to spank your child as an act of good parental control!!! And yes people have been prosecuted.

F**kin amazing!

I undertook an interesting study of the financial systems of the Old Testimony for a university course, Sounds boring right, actually very fascinating from a macro economics point of view.

One thing I got from it, it's that when people get to put their own money into an organisation that helps other people, they are far more likely to pull it out again when that organisation stops doing its job properly.

Try pulling your tax dollar out of the Federal government next time you're yet again not happy with the results from a public sector project gone bad….

Just $0.02 from a naturally born socialist.
