1 dead, 2 injured in explosion at Md. Army base
May 21, 2009 - 2:29pm

ABERDEEN PROVING GROUND, Md. - One person died and two were injured Thursday in a fire involving a test vehicle at the Army's Aberdeen Proving Ground, base officials said.

An apparent malfunction involving a test vehicle in the Edgewood Area of the Harford County base caused the fire, the base said in a statement.

The employees were not identified and it was not immediately clear if they were soldiers or civilians. The injured employees were taken to the Johns Hopkins Bayview Medical Center in Baltimore.

The Army said the fire has been contained and there was no danger to the public.

In March, a contract employee also died in an electrocution at an Army research lab at the facility about 20 miles north of Baltimore, which is the Army's oldest active base for testing, training and research involving military weapons.

The base tests a wide variety of technologies from artillery to chemical weapons, to wheeled vehicles.
