Absolutely shocking! I just cannot believe such a thing would exist within the EU. One thing about the EU - they always seem to have a firm grasp of the obvious.

EU report finds discrimination against minorities

A new European Union survey says more than half the region's ethnic minorities and immigrants believe they face discrimination, with gypsies and Africans reporting the most abuse.

The study, the first of its kind by the EU's Fundamental Rights Agency, found many of those questioned say they have experienced discrimination in the last year when looking for work or trying to get a bank loan.

Wednesday's report says 55% of immigrants and minorities think that "discrimination based on ethnic origin is widespread in their country." Of those asked, 37% say they faced discrimination in the past year.

The survey questioned 23,500 people from ethnic minorities or an immigrant background across the 27-nation EU to examine their experiences of racism or discrimination.

How can this be?? I thought discrimination only existed in the evil, decadent USA!

I would say that Europeans tend to be a little more liberal minded than Americans but discrimination occurs everywhere. It's mostly the older and established conservatives that are like that. Bridgit Bardot has gotten into trouble for some of her public remarks about immigrants living in France. I've read and heard that the Swiss and the Austrians are some of the most discriminating on that side of the pond, but they are not alone. In some of the small villages and towns of East Germany where I lived and worked the people there didn't even like Germans who were from the western part of the country. I was only lucky in that I knew about the culture and spoke the language fairly well. I believe that caucasian Americans are probably the least discriminated against ethnic group in Europe. The eastern Europeans are also very bad about discriminating against people from other cultures. Gypsies are not treated well in Poland. I've been there and know this for a fact.
