Saw it over the weekend - to say the least, it was shocking. It made you uncomfortable. It made you participate in the “Bastardization” of history too – but you willingly go along with it because – ultimately, this is a comedy.
There are no good guys here, take that back, there are two – but these two are good only because they are justified in what they do. Just thought of a third Good Guy – not giving anything away, but the Whermacht Feldweble (NCO) had probably the best single (but short) performance in the movie. Just noticed this actor’s popularity is up 372% on IMDB – his name is Richard Sammel. In fact, this guy made such an impression on me, that I predict he will be on to bigger and better roles in the future (up to now, he has mostly done German Films).
Pitt and his band of bastards (aptly named) are no heroes. But not villains either – ultimately, you don’t have any feeling for them at all. The bits of comic departure in their manner of speech and their, over the top, attitude against Nazis helps make them acceptable – but you probably would not want to invite any of them home for dinner.
The two best scenes in the movie are (again, not giving anything away) the first scene – it is called “Chapter One.” This scene introduces you to the Nazi version of Colombo – the scene is filled with a growing tension, while Colombo turns the screws. When the scene is over, you realize that Colombo, otherwise known as Colonel Landa is “The Man.” Hitler had nothing on him. By the way, that actor (Christoph Waltz) is being considered for best actor nomination – he will probably get it too.
The other scene that is really memorable is the “Cellar Scene.” If I were to name that scene, I would call it: Cinderella meets the “Good, the Bad, and the Ugly.” Won’t go into any details, but it was pure Tarantino (he is starting to get predictable maybe).
One more thing about the cellar scene – since I was sitting with my wife while we watched the movie and because many, many scenes are in German that are not translated (most are), I was translating for my wife. During one of those scenes in the Cellar, a fatal mistake was made. I saw it instantly and told her (actually showed her the mistake) the mistake was nonverbal. I don’t get to impress too many people with my knowledge and insight these days, other than my wife, but she says she loves me – all the same, she was duly impressed when I was proved correct.
I am going to see the movie again - this time, I will know when to blink - the reason I want to watch it again is because it is Tarantino – there is so much that is missed that will reveal itself with subsequent viewings.
Finally, if Tarantino had thought about sucking on a fish, or at least, having one of his actors suck on one, I am sure he would have gladly included it in the movie – it would have fit in very well.
