Holy Cross brother known for waving American flag along S.R. 933 dies

A well-known South Bend man who wore his patriotism on his sleeve has passed away.

We learned that Holy Cross Brother Edward Courtney died Monday night following a long illness.

In all likelihood, you probably saw Brother Courtney at one time or another. The 90-year-old was a bit of a "living landmark."

For 17 years, he waved the American flag along State Road 933.

It was a promise the World War II veteran made to himself -- to support the flag any way he could.

His dedication earned him several patriotic awards and a permanent place in the memories of many in Michiana.

Ironically, Brother Courtney's last public appearance was on St. Patrick's Day back in 2006.

Brother Courtney was all smiles as he served as grand marshal of South Bend's St. Paddy's Day parade.

A funeral mass for Brother Courtney will be held Saturday at 10:00 a.m. at St. Joseph Chapel on the Holy Cross campus.

I use to hide around the corner and listen to my father, his brothers, and friends talk about their times in Europe and the Pacific. It's staggering to comprehend that an entire generation of warriors are dying at a thousand a day....and very soon will be gone. Even the "Forgotten War" vet's are in the 70's....damn I feel old.

God bless them all for they surely ensured that their families (us) would live in a free nation. I will forever remain in awe of them.
