Major Blast Hits Hotel in Baghdad

BAGHDAD, IRAQ: A suspected car bomb blew up outside the Shaheen hotel in central Baghdad shortly after dawn on Wednesday, destroying the building and causing many casualties, witnesses told the Reuters news service. No accurate count of casualties has so far been ascertained and it is not known if there were fatalities at the scene. Several Red Crescent ambulances were seen leaving the scene of the incident with wounded victims. A U.S. military rapid-response contingent rapidly sealed off the area and few other official details are currently being made available.

What ever came of this??

BAGHDAD, Iraq — American forces discovered a car bomb Tuesday in a parking lot near the offices of the U.S.-appointed Iraqi Governing Council (search), the U.S. command said.

The car rigged with explosives was found at Gate 2, a high-security checkpoint manned by U.S. troops, the command said. U.S. troops sealed off the area as bomb disposal experts tried to defuse it.

The gate is close to the offices of the Governing Council and a short distance from a convention center where the U.S.-led coalition holds briefings for national and international media.

Anyone have an update?? I'd be curious to know what their tactics are, i.e. types of explosives used, rigging procedures, etc.

Iraq was never lost and Afghanistan was never quite the easy good war. Those in the media too often pile on and follow the polls rather than offer independent analysis. Campaign rhetoric and politics are one thing - the responsibility of governance is quite another.
